It didn't work for me. I pounded it in and it just spun. I guess my threads are really seized in there and the metal is really poor quality. I would say to hammer it in really good before you try to spin it. I tried to take it easy in fear of cracking the thermostat housing casting and maybe that was my downfall. I ended up pounding on it with moderate force from a 3-lb hammer and I didn't hurt the housing, but it still just spun inside the broken fitting. I guess I'll try using a die-grinder to get most of it out and then a 3/4" NPT tap to clean out the threads.

This is a tool you hate to use but love to have. Lets face it, by the time you need this tool, you are not having a good day. It does what its name implies and removes broken couplers as long as there is enough left to bite into.

Once you get the coupler out with this tool, you have a few choices.. Go back with a factory style coupler like I did, or get a hose adapter coupler and replace the metal line with rubber hose and a foolproof connection. If you are using a factory style quick disconnect coupler, make sure to get the steel replacement and not the pot metal type factory one.

I had to extract the GM pot metal heater hose coupler after breaking it off when replacing the factory leaker with a steel one from Dorman. This tool just made the hole bigger until it was the size of the remover. The deteriorated pot metal coupler crumbled like a cookie. I had to drill out 11/16" and then 1/2" NPT tap the intake to clear the threads of the old material. Don't waste your time trying to remove all the material from the intake threads as you chance damaging them, let the tap do the work and save yourself hours of frustration!

This tool sort of worked for me. It didn't remove the fitting, but it did cut out the middle of it like a reamer would. That left me with a thin ring of fitting that was easier to hacksaw through, and then chip out with a hammer and punch. The 1/2" NPT tap from Harbor Freight was a requirement to clean up the threads before the new fitting would go in.

This was on a 1998 Suburban with a 7.4 engine that was crusty, dusty, and rusty. It might work better on a newer, cleaner engine.

My '99 Suburban started spewing coolant on the exhaust causing a nice cloud coming from under the hood. After it cooled a little I was able to see that the coupler had a crack in it. When I tried to remove it, half of it stayed in the intake. I saw a video on-line about this tool and figured "Why not". It worked like a charm. I used a 5/8 socket on a 1/2" extension, using a hammer I made sure that it was seated well into the remaining threads. It took a lot of force to remove the old threads. I had an 18" breaker bar with another foot and a half or so of a " cheater bar' on it as well. It then came loose, and never even thought of slipping. This little purchase saved me a lot of grief.

This tool worked perfectly on my pickup: a 1993 Chevy C1500 "W/T" with a 4.3L engine. The quick-release heater hose nipple threaded in the back of the intake manifold (next to the distributor) broke off after I applied very little torque. It was brittle and crumbled easily, as I've learned is common with these trucks. The threaded portion was stuck in the manifold, and I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to get it out unless I removed the manifold, but this tool did the trick. It took 2 attempts; on the first attempt I was a little timid about hammering the tool into the broken nipple, and it just slipped. On the second try it worked as advertised. Afterward, the threads in the manifold were still in perfect shape, and all I had to do was use a wet/dry vac to clean some of the "crumbles" out of the manifold.

like another user said. It's a love/hate relationship with this tool. You hate the fact that you have to use it but it turns your day around when it does its job. Great tool, reasonable pricing everywhere. Deffinetly something a mechanic should have in his junk drawer.

It works! It's tricky getting enough leverage but you've got it, you've got it! Just be patient.
