Having used the original years ago I was disappointed by the quality (lite plastic housing, hard to open battery bay and terrible hissing even at low levels). I wish I had checked the reviews more carefully before ordering.

First off, Let me say this review is not about the seller, they were excellent!! This is strictly about the unit(s) purchased. The Rockman guitar ace is by far the sorriest small amplifier I have ever owned. Not worth the time or money. (I’ve been playing for more than 35 years.) This one, and it’s cousin the Rockman Metal Ace (of which, there is almost no notable difference, we’ve tested side by side. Can't Explain the cost difference.), Neither unit have any real practical usage for anything other than dry-clean amplification, as long as your not expecting any low end. Both of these (Guitar and Metal) units have Absolutely No Low end, no adjustments. Your sound is dominated mids, high mids and highs. (Test with a ‘61 Stratocaster with both Single Coil and Humbucking, and on a ‘69 goldtop Les Paul, solid Mahogany body and Neck. Both guitars sound fantastic though almost everything else I’ve ever tested them on. (if you want more detail, ask) The distortion in these units has really lost a lot of the original harmonic distortion sound. Shultz basically started the Harmonic Distortion craze when his first album came out. These units now sound like the typical, cheep, overdriven transistor amps that you could make in your living room in an evening, Using the schematics from the old Radio Electronics or Popular Electronics magazines. I do not recommend this unit if you actually play any instrument that requires amplification. What a huge let down, I was hoping they would have had improved these over the years. Instead, it seems as though it lost what little it had since Dunlop took the manufacturing over. They are not worth the asking price, I would suggest $10 to $15, tops

I received my Rockman Guitar Ace and 12V adapter this morning along with a set of wireless Sennheiser RS 120 headphones. The set of headphones that comes with the unit are NOT worth removing from the package.

After seeing many of the love/hate reviews, it became very clear that one needs to remember the purpose of this unit is an option to practice quietly and of course you also can jam along with a music track at the same time. It will never sound like a good guitar amplifier, so don't expect it too.

The controls are simple and straight forward. Plugging the guitar chord into the input of the unit turns the unit on. Two push buttons; Clean/Distort and Semi/Heavy, a volume control, aux stereo input, head phone jack, and 12V adapter plug. Also has a belt clip so if you want to walk around the neighborhood playing you could...

Clean Position: since I am running my pedal board into the Rockman input so I will only using the clean position. It's tinny sounding compared to amp sound; it is usable and adjusting the headphone tone input settings gives it a better tone, seemingly less headphone volume is better I than louder settings. The Rockman and my Wampler Pinnacle distortion pedal appear to not like each other much. Could adjust the pedal but it is set for the amplifier, not the head phones, will be something to work around during practice.

Distorted Positions: Played a bit, not impressed at all! It has a Semi distorted and Heavy distorted settings, the semi setting is OK. Honestly, I use my pedal board for this sound so I will never use this anyway. If you're into metal, the Metal version Rockman might be a better choice. The Heavy Dist setting sounded horrible to me, distortion over ran all tone quality.

Buy the original Rockman SR&D on ebay. Dunlop owns the products now and it is not the same thing as it was in the day. I own the X100, Ultralight, Soloist and Bass Rockman. They all sound amazing.

I bought a Dunlop Rockman Guitar Ace to complement my old SR&D Guitar Ace. The only significant physical changes are the Dunlop sticker on the back and the choice of input jack hardware on the control panel. The Dunlop Rockman lacks the SR&D logo on the front of the body.

To me, the SR&D and Dunlop products sound alike, in clean and distorted modes. It appears that Dunlop has succeeded in continuing the tradition that Tom Scholz started. The settings are limited, but I think the Guitar Ace still has a great sound when used with decent headphones.

It would be nice to see Dunlop re-release some of the more sophisticated Rockman products, such as the X100 or the Soloist.

It was too noisy. The distortion mode is really bad. Without distortion mode sound is really clear. Do not buy!

My honey purchased this for his daughter's 12th birthday. She's just learning to play guitar, and although she's got that natural talent- she isn't exactly quiet or always in tune. Nevertheless, her mother has been very patient with the loud noise coming from her daugher's bedroom. This awesome little amplifier allows her daughter to play and the mother to keep her sanity. Basically it allows you to play your guitar and listen to the sound with earphones rather than speakers. Which prevents sibling irritation and parental headaches. So far his daughter seems to love it. It works efficiently, has great sound quality, easily connects to the guitar, and allows her to practice to her own beat. Plus it's portable! She can take it to school, the park, wherever she wants to play.

My honey also bought one for himself (thank goodness). The noise reduction is heaven-sent. No more loud guitar playing! Well, for him there is- but not for me. He loves the thing and is always using it. It's literally a permanent part of our kitchen table now. His only complaint is that it drains the battery (D battery) quite quickly. Which is a bit expensive and a pain in the arse- because you have to constantly be changing it. Nevertheless it seems to be a huge hit with both of them. And aside from the battery downfall- it's a great asset to any guitar player.
