Based on my experience with this product, I would speculate that any review claiming that the circuit breaker locator randomly beeps and doesn't properly indicate the correct circuit breaker is from someone who didn't read and follow the product's simple instructions. The instructions are included in a short instruction sheet, but are also printed on a nice indelible sticker on the receiver itself. Once you use the product a time or two, and think about what it's doing, you really don't need the instructions, though, in my opinion.

The instructions say:
"At the breaker box or fuse box, hold the RECEIVER PERPENDICULAR to the breakers. With the power on, scan the rows of breakers from top to bottom (see Figure 3). During this scan, the RECEIVER may beep and flash at several breakers. This is a normal part of the identification process. When you have completed one scan of all the breakers, go back to the first breaker and, WITHOUT TOUCHING THE POWER BUTTON, SCAN THEM ALL A SECOND TIME. When the receiver beeps and the arrow flashes during the second scan, you have correctly identified the circuit."

When you turn on the receiver, it begins continuously sniffing out a signal from the transmitter, and gauging the signal strength it is receiving from the transmitter. Anytime it receives a signal of equal strength or stronger than any signal it has received since it was powered on, it beeps and flashes the arrow, and memorizes this new strongest signal strength. The initial scan over the circuit breakers is essentially calibrating the receiver, so that it then knows the strongest received signal strength.Read more ›

After reading some lousy reviews for similar products, I decided to take a chance on this manufacturer and I was not disappointed. It works well IF you follow the directions. Will accurately narrow the circuit down to two adjacent circuits. MUCH better than flipping them all off and on to find "the one." I deducted one star because it seems a little flimsy and lightweight, but I am not using this professionally so I can live with that. Also, as another reviewer noted, it is very easy to accidentally turn it on so you really can't leave the battery installed or it will run down. I am generally happy with this unit for my purposes.

Not to expensive in price and gets the job done. I got really tired running up and down stairs all the time trying to find the right breaker. I know some of my customers will be disappointed in not having their breaker boxes labeled properly. Little hard to trace behind walls but that is not what I got it for.
One thing to watch out for is depressing the button on the side by other tools in the bag, leave the battery out unless you want to chage batteries often.

Having owned the Sniff-It 2 for several months now, I've discovered I really like the wider range of voltages this unit can detect because of its sensitivity adjustment. Before each use, I adjust the sensitivity on a known "live" circuit. This knob can also be turned all the way down, so that it clicks 'off'. This is great for storage between uses. When turned on, but not detecting voltage, it produces an occasional beep to let you know it is on. It is a helpful reminder to turn the unit off, saving the battery.

It flashes and beeps faster when in closer proximity to AC voltage, or sensing a higher voltage for a given sensitivity adjustment. The beep feature came in handy when attempting to turn off an unlabeled circuit. I placed the unit next to the live wire, so it would begin beeping. I then went to the panel and turned off breakers one-at-a-time, listening for beeping as I went; made this one-man job easier.

I agree with the other reviewer that this device can be very helpful when working on "knob & tube" wiring.

Seems durable, since I have dropped the unit several times and the worst that has happened, so far, is the battery cover has popped off; nothing has broken.

It is subtantially 'fatter' that other pen-style voltage detectors, so it takes up more room in your shirt pocket. However, at times, I have hung it on the outside of my pocket and this seems to work.

The battery is a 12V A23, which is a bit out of the ordinary, but I am still on the first one, and it seems to be going strong.

I would recommend the Triplett 9601 Sniff-It 2 to anyone shopping for a non-contact voltage detector.

This breaker tester is perfect for the job. And, the price can't be beat. Probably something you'll use one time to identify the switches in the box and, once that's done, the tester will go into your tool chest. It does exactly what it says it will do. One recommendation, run it a few times on the same circuit to be sure of the reading. I think that interference from someone using a plug in another room at exactly the time you test might throw it off. Better yet - chase everyone out of the house while you're doing this.

Several people complained about how this works. I don't have any problem if I follow the directions. Plug the transmitter into the outlet. Scan the entire panel box one time, then scan it again to indicate the appropriate breaker. I have only used it a couple times, but it worked perfectly in each instance.
