Betadine is an excellent disinfecting product for cleaning wounds or a fresh incision. I'm not a medical worker of any sort, but having used Betadine to keep my C-section incision clean (twice!), I know it's a good product.

I purchased this to wash my horses that had aquired a fungus that was hard to kill. It is the best for that application for me.

Have used this product for years in the shower and to treat wounds incurred to or by horses, dogs, etc. However, have had to go to a Feed Store and never know if they will have it in stock or not. I decided to see if I could get it through Amazon and voila, of course I could. This was a much better way to buy it. It is iodine-based, so if one is allergic to Iodine, would not be a choice.

I ordered this product to give my feet a daily scrub to prevent foot odor. Since using it, I have seen a marked improvement such that I am no longer embarrased to be areound people. The odor is now under control. I highly recommend this product to those who have a similar issue. The reddish brown-color that coats my skin gives me reassurance that the product has been applied and is working, and is unique to Betadyne.

Seriously. A little bottle in your purse and desk wouldn't be a bad idea either. The uses are many. Cuts and scrapes heal faster, and you'll meet with less resistence from the little ones as it doesn't hurt like other disinfectants. .

As a germicide, Betadine was used in hospitals. In particular, surgeons swabbed an area on the patient before cutting. The stuff was very potent because of the germ killing properties of iodine. The only problem was the deep brown stain that was left behind upon drying.

Betadine has been eclipsed by a better alternative - chlorhexidine gluconate. It is the ideal antiseptic skin cleanser - the "gold standard" in the opinion of numerous medical people. According to all available literature on the internet, a 2% solution kills a broad spectrum of micro-bacteria on contact. The chemical has a positive charge and binds to bacteria that is negatively charged. This electrical action weakens and disintegrates the bacterial cell membrane wall, thus destroying the organism. Because human and animal tissues are also negatively charge, the agent binds to the skin for the next five to six hours. As a result, the affected area inhibits bacterial growth.

The antiseptic properties only affect organisms on the skin. ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS AND CHEMOTHERAPY's "Penetration of Chlorhexidine into Human Skin" reported "poor penetration of chlorhexidine into skin following 2 min. and 30 min. exposures to chlorhexidine was observed." In other words, the agent is relatively safe because it does not penetrate the skin and get absorbed into human tissue or the blood stream and cause damage or toxic chemical reactions.
.
A 2% solution is the recommended concentration to be used for surgical scrubbing according to EPIC and CDC guidelines. This maybe an overkill for consumer usage. As a skin cleanser, THE JOURNAL OF INFECTIOUS NURSING reported that anything over a 0.
