If you're new to freeze dried meals, start with Mountain House and don't look back. Pick the Spaghetti or Lasagna with Meat Sauce, and then branch out from there. You won't go wrong.

If you've already had Mountain House before and know how much better they taste than the competition (Backpacker's Pantry, etc.) but are looking to add a little variety, the Chicken a la King is remarkably good. After a long first day on the trail I prefer to wolf down the other more tomato-y flavors that just feel heartier and more comfort-foody, but on day 2 or 3 the "King" is straight up delicious.

This is also the flavor that I'm most tempted to eat at home when I don't feel like cooking or ordering in. If it tells you anything, I've also brought this on international trips and chosen it for its good taste over (expenses-paid) room service, including at a Hilton.

Bottom line up front: This type of food is a great choice for an emergency food supply, especially for sheltering in place or evacuating by vehicle. The #10 cans have a 25-year shelf life, so you can buy them and not worry about rotating your stock for a couple of decades. The biggest downside is that once opened, they need to be used up right away.

SHELF LIFE - The #10 cans have a 25-year shelf life (unopened). The biggest downside to #10 cans versus individual pouches is that the 25-year shelf life turns into a 1-week shelf life once they've been opened. Since each can has enough for 10 servings, you'll be eating the same thing for several meals unless you're cooking for a group.

TASTE - In my experience, Mountain House food is really tasty. Let me caveat this review by saying that although I've eaten other Mountain House freeze-dried food, I haven't had occasion to open the ones in the #10 cans (see my review of the "Mountain House 72-Hour Emergency Meal Kit"). That having been said, the Mountain House food I have tried has been very, very good tasting -- not just good compared to other survival foods, but good period. I have no reason to expect that these would be any different.

WEIGHT/CONVENIENCE - As steel cans, they're reasonably durable and reasonably lightweight (not backpacking light, but you don't have to be a weightlifter to move a large box of them). They do take up a bit of volume, but since the overwhelming majority of long-term emergency scenarios involve sheltering in place or evacuating by vehicle, I wouldn't let that be a deal breaker (personnally, I have a stock of individual pouches just in case I have to leave on foot, but most of my food is in these cans).

Of all the backpacker meals that are available, this one is my favorite. And my husband's favorite. And my brother's favorite. We bought a couple more of these to keep in our 72-hr kit. They also stay good longer than a year :)

We buy number 10 cans and split them up into single meal size just before summer. We store the food in the freezer. Works well with freeze-dried, and I do not tire of this dish. Some of the other freeze-dried foods get pretty boring.

Mountain house has some great freeze-dried meals. This is not one of them.

The dish has a peculiar odor and taste that reminds me of burned feathers or hair with just a whiff of feces.

I had to spit it out. Obviously I know that the food does not contained burned feathers or feces and I am sure it is safe. I think the culprit is actually "grilled chicken". Any charring of chicken flesh at all imparts frozen and freeze-dried foods with a very unpleasant odor and flavor (think 'Healthy Choice frozen chicken meals).

I will add that some people seem not to mind or notice this. For myself, I'll pass.

If you follow the directions and let this product completely rehydrate, I cannot believe how tasty it is. Being out in the woods and enjoying a home cooked meal is heavenly. I was extremely impressed with the flavor and texture. I would definitely purchase again.

I have had several different meals of moutain house chow, and I think they are the best of the lot. Unfortunately mountain house knows that, cause they are the most expensive. Now if they can figure how to get some of that chemistry out of it, and go with GMO free, and organic, that would be a miracle.

Great food for hiking and camping. Divide can into smaller portions, placing in plastic bags, and you can easy take with you. Boil some water, rehydrated, and you have great tasting meals in a couple minutes. Also makes fantastic emergency meals when power is out during Winter or Summer storms. Use camp stove outside or grill, and boil up some water to make delicious meal to feed the bored hoards when the Internet, or cell phones are down.
