Tried one to cut some in ground PVC garden reticulation pipe which I needed to repair. It struggled to make a mark. Gave up and used a PVC pipe cutter. The others can stay in their packets. Might be able to use them for cutting water melons!! I would not recommend these.

Update. This saw worked really well. Now I know how to use it properly. Used it to cut some, in the ground 2 inch PVC pipe. Once I got it started it went through very very quickly. I would give it 5 stars now.

Wow. I bought this on a lark- I have an uderground 4" SCH40 pipe that I needed to cut to add a Wye. Figured I'd just use a sawzall, but then saw this and figured I'd try something new. Most of the uses I've seen online were with smaller pipe, so I got in the hole and was prepared to pull for quite a while. As noted in the other review responses, you need to pull tight and fast for several strokes to get a bite. Did that, and a few seconds later I thought I'd broken the line since I saw it coming out of the top side of the pipe. BUT, soon both sides of the line met and pulled through. Amazing. Took less than 30 seconds to get all the way through. Same experience with the second cut. Since there's almost zero kerf, I had to bang the cutout portion with a hammer to break it free, but it came right out. I wouldn't believe it unless I'd done it myself!

A couple other thoughts: It would probably take a bit of practice to get the cuts really square. Mine weren't bad, but not perfect. And due to the 'hunting' and sliding that happens in order to establish a bite, you'll need to be happy with a possible 1/4"-1/2" swag of the actual cut you want. Since I'm using Fernco sleeves to insert the Wye, it wasn't a real consideration for me, but if your plan is to glue in a fitting, make sure you have fittings with proper overlap (for instance, with this 4", the SCH40 fitting have 2" overlap, which would be plenty; but those cheaper irrigation fittings only have about an inch). #2: After these two cuts, the line is twisted up and isn't flat anymore. I'm not sure how many more cuts before it becomes unusable (if ever), but if you need to do a bunch of cuts with this I'd pick up a spare or two just in case.

Try it, you'll like it!

I used this in my tight waste compartment in my RV. It worked fine, but melted the PVC partially through. I had to slow down, and remove the melted PVC before it jamed the saw. It didn't make a completely straight cut, but it worked out fine.

So simple, yet so ingenious. Has worked a treat each and every time I've needed it. The key is that once you've sliced through the pipe, remove the cable saw and place it aside to cool off....in other words, don't allow it to melt onto the plastic. It creates a lot of heat from the friction.

Works pretty well but need to be careful when starting to ensure it cuts on the line and does not slide. I think this is partly due to it shipping coiled. Once it gets the cut started though it works pretty well although if you are too aggressive it can get stuck.
