I have used a few different types of media but this takes the blue ribbon. It is the best out there. Takes a while to get cyled but once it's in your tank never falls out of cyle.It is a little more money than other types but it's not something you will replace at least not for a few years :) i have noticed that other media crumbles or breaks not this stuff.

For close to forty years I've found the quality of ehiem products to surpass any other filter, media or virtually any product designed to enrich the hobby of keeping aquatic life. Few can compare to the build quality, performance and functionality of eheim and this media is no exception.

As an engineer Gunter Eheim was a maverick. His efforts to realize the importance of biological filtration and building strong colonies of nitrifying bacteria are the mainstay of virtually every filter system in the world today. All this said Substrate Pro is the perfect choice for building a powerful colony of good nitrifying bacteria and building it quickly. Sintered glass provides millions of microscopic crevices per 2mm sphere - and the media will never break down, making it perfect for this application.

Yes, conpared to other media it may be expensive but remember, ths media will last you forever it does not break down and need to be replaced.

Regarding media placement - this depends on if your canister filter (eheim or not) filters the water from the top down or the bottom up. Biological media should be the second line of defense after mechanical media for proper placement an excellent filtration.

If your filter draws in tank water from the bottom like say a Fluval FX5 then you want the media either right above it or someplace in the middle. If on the otherhand your filter draws in water from the top down like any of the eheim classic series filters then you want the Media close to the top however, not in the top basket or layer.

Although Mech is considered a mechanical media substrate it does a fine job maintaining plenty of nitrifying bacteria as well.

After watching a few aquarium filter setup videos on YouTube by this British guy, I looked for the biological filter media he was selling but found these. I was a little skeptical at first but haven’t had a second thought since I’ve installed them. I am using a Aquatop DF200 with half a box of these on last(top) stage of the canister. I placed the foam and mechanical filtration on the bottom as he suggested, plastic bio balls on the middle and these at the top. I put my old bio ceramic tubes on the very bottom to provide a little slowing of the water as it comes into the filer housing. I’ve not had a cleaner aquarium since then.

I feel this is the best media there is available. My friends both have ceramic rings and bio balls. I chose this for my canister filter and I was not disappointed. Very neat product and I am a believer after I waited what seemed like forever to cycle my new setup. Even after adding bio media from other mature tanks it wasn't until I added this product to the mix that I cycled. This box that i purchased has two 1L bags in it. Each bag filled one tray of my canister filter. I have a pawhut 265gph 3 stage to give an ideal of what size you need for your filter.

I have a Aqua Clear 20 on my 5 gallon planted tank that's dirted and will be starting another tank for my little brother in the future. We also have a mini canister filter for his baby turtle (Zoo Med 501).

The quality of the media and the price is good, especially since I got it on sale. If it wasn't purchased on sale, then I would have settled for something cheaper. Anyways the amount of media is enough to load multiple filters and will last a long time because of the material. Size and shape is great and allows you to pack in a good deal of media. Excellent for smaller filters and also great for larger ones.

Currently have Biomax in my tank and Substrat Pro in the canister. Both are great, but I notice that the Biomax crumbles (sometimes quite a bit) whenever I clean the filter media. This doesn't seem to be a problem for Substrat Pro. Will have to see how Substrat Pro performs in the long term.

Good stuff. One 2L box fills one tray in my SunSun 303B external canister filter. My kids (which means me) inherited a 20 gal tank with 5 goldfish in it and as anyone who is in the know, knows, that is WAY bad overload. Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates were all above super critical levels as you can imagine. Got a cheap Sunsun canister and put some of this in it.

Did some water changes to reduce all levels immediately but now that I have a couple trays full of this stuff my ammonia and nitrates are ZERO! Always. I still have to do waters changes twice a week to keep the Nitrates in check but that's not a big deal.

Side note: Appears the Sunsun's might just be a rebranded JBJ rector, made by the same company. If so then these Sunsun canisters are probably better than the price suggests. They might be a sleeper....anyways...thats a review for a different page.

Great bio media for any filter. I use this in all my canister filters as well as my nano HOB for my 5 gallon tank. In the HOB I literally just fill up the compartment with sponge pads and then pour this stuff in with it. Works great and is easily cleaned.
