I like the idea of a containment system like this, which allows you to correct and contain. However, I think the implementation of the dog collars is severly lacking as far as the durability. When it is working, it does discourage the dogs from leaving our property. Since we have 1 1/2 acres of land, and 2 German short hair pointers, it is essential that they get exercise, but not leave the surrounding areas. It works fine when it is working, and the training does work good. But the collars seem to go bad within a couple of months, and the batteries need replacing on a very regular schedule every two months. And the batteries are relativity expensive (Usually over $6 at Radio shack, or higher). Thus it does cost more than $75 a year just for batteries. But in two years I have had to buy more than 7 collars just to have two that work. And the company doesn't seem to care much. I am sending 4 collars back to them to have them see why they have gone bad, but I had to suggest this, and ask them to study it. Furthermore, they did not say we would be happy to replace them, just that we will study why they went bad. They all exhibit the same problem and failure mode. I just think the engineering lacks something and they must have had a bad part in it that fails for some reason or other. I would seriously tell someone not to buy this product line from them, maybe another vendor, or try another line in their product lines, like I am, the IUC version (I am using the SD-3100 version). Since I have spent over $1200 over the past two years on trying to keep dogs in, I am not happy with this product. I will try their new version, but if it does not work, then I will switch vendors.Read more ›

I needed to add a collar to my sad 2000 system that encloses a 5 acre area. This collar worked with the existing system and gave me the added feature of a remote. I now have a backup when my sd2000 goes down. When I first had to make the decision to install invisible fencing I was torn thinking that it was a cruel way. But after considering the alternative I realized it was my only option with the size of yard I have. With the proper training my dogs only had one incident each, not as cruel as I thought. I now think that not having the fence would be more cruel because of the possible dangers my dogs would face if they were allowed to roam the neighborhood, I live in the country and there are many dangers. They won't even approach the line when deer visit the yard and run away when the dogs come out, unbelievable. The deer have even learned where the line is and stand 10 feet on the other side and graze while the dogs are out barking at them. I just added a third dog and was able to train him in just a couple of days. Now the whole pack can enjoy the freedom of the yard and I don't worry about them leaving to investigate the neighborhood or chase wild animals that come to visit. I have completely change my opinion on these fences after experiencing them.

We have had this system for the past 12 years and it has been excellent. We don't use it's much in the training mode since batteries last about 2 weeks vs over a year in contain only mode.

The only problems we have had have been user error, mostly from being a bit lazy & not burying areas we should have & the wire breaking - moose tripping on it, not noticing that utilities workers had disturbed it, etcetera. We have had almost no problems for the past 8 years since we fully buried it. It's actually easy to bury though, used an edger tool to cut the turf a bit & slipped the wire under probably not even an inch- just so it won't catch the mower or anything crossing it. Crossing paved driveways was, however, more challenging since I had to cut a slot with a circular saw, lay the wire, & cover with caulk.

We have had 2-3 dogs at a time over the years and they are free to roam our 2 acres, yet we have been able to create zones that keep them out of various "islands" like gardens.

The savings from a conventional fence is huge, the aesthetics are of course better, allowing a more decorative fence if you prefer instead of a chain link fence that some dogs will still dig under.

Don't know how we lived without this system. We've had it 6 years. The fence works, period. And the handheld remote is the best "off-leash" training system I've ever run across. Thank goodness our dog won't run into the street, get into trouble with other dogs or kids, or pull us dangerously with a leash! After training, our dog is on great behavior 99% of the time, and when we need to warn him away from trouble, the audible beep works 99% of the those times. Everyone says we have such a terrific dog. Highly recommend this system if you and your dog encounter other people or animals. Plus, the customer support is excellent.
