Creuset makes the best enameled cast iron cookware on the planet and this oval fish skillet is no exception. It's dimensions however, while being great for cooking a whole fish, require the use of 2 burners (medium size) adjacent to each other. I have a Viking cook top and the largest burner is not capable of heating the pan out to the far edges of the oval, in spite of Creuset's legendary ability to distribute heat evenly. If you don't have 2 adjacent medium sized burners on your cook top, this pan is not the right choice for you. The photos suggest a shape that is circular and just slightly out of round, but this is a very serious oval. Make a template using the published dimensions to be sure this is the right pan for you before ordering.

I have a gas stove with side by side burners so have none of the uneven heating issues others have complained about. It is heavy, really heavy, which I like. I don't really cook fish but plan to keep it on the stove and use a a griddle/skillet. I was confused about the size in the description, it made it seem way bigger than it actually is. Perhaps I'm just slow that way. The 18" measurement includes the width of the pan and the handle and pan edge assist thingy on the other side. the center of the oval is about 10 inches. Overall a great size, weight and value, plus its so pretty.

I own a number of pieces of cast iron of various brands, LeCreuset enameled cast iron, and Staub enameled cast iron. I love my cast iron and wouldn't part with it, but the enameled cast iron needs less maintenance and looks nice in the available colors. In comparing the LeCreuset and Staub enameled cast iron that I have, both are comparable in price and ease of cleanup, but I have noticed that the finish on the outside of the Staub pans is much more easily scratched. If the pans are stacked, the finish on the outside is scratched and very quickly they don't look very nice anymore. So far, I haven't had this problem with the LeCreuset pans. I don't think very many people have enough storage space in their kitchens to store pans so they don't touch. This for me makes the LeCreuset pans the better value.

This is a hybrid pan-a cross between a griddle and a skillet. It fits perfectly on my stovetop bridge burner and has the added bonus of having 1 1/2" sides so deglazing works perfectly. I just use it as an extra large skillet and only have to use low to medium heat. All Le Creuset looks beautiful on the table so serving in this pan looks great. Cleaning is a breeze--just let it cool, soak for a short periiod of time and everything wipes off easily! When recipes work better with heavier cookware, Le Creuset is my choice--I have many pieces (different colors!) and really enjoy using all of them. (All-Clad is my choice for other duties...) If heavy pans are not an issue for you, try Le Creuset!

I decided to splurge on this item. I love Le Creuset, and the quality is always top notch. The picture really does make the item look much less oval than what is actually is, however that is what I was looking for. I have a 5 burner Viking gas range, and it worked perfectly with my 2 burners, and distributed the heat wonderfully. I can see this piece being one of my go to pans! Seemed well seasoned out of the box.

This works great! In addition, I use it for a cookie sheet. The cookies come out perfectly and evenly baked on both sides.

This pan covers both front and back burners so for me I can cook 2 items at the same time at different temps! No lid but use a cookie sheet to steam when necessary. The only thing I haven't mastered is eggs that don't stick :( No matter how low the temp they still leave have the egg in the pan but the coating is such that it cleans up very easily with a quick soak so no bother there. I have electric but prefer gas heat...wondering if it would be more even heating if this were used?

I cooked on this pan first in a clients home (while doing a chef prepared dinner). I loved it & bought one for myself. I've always loved cast iron for fish, and in general. But this pan is the perfect shape, thickness, and design. I couldn't be more pleased with it.
