This recording defines Roots Rock. Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, and Gene Taylor were all "Formerly" participants in great Roots Rock ventures. In this aggregation, their experience, sense, musicality, and understanding work seamlessly.

If comparisons are helpful, I had the same sense of "This is it!" were I first heard this record as I did when I first heard The Band's second album--"The Brown Album"--many years ago.

Grab a copy of this CD while it's available in this reissue. I can make no stronger recommendation.

From a west Texas honkytonk to the Alberta prairies there is only one kind of music that elk and armadillos both take notice of....

Texas royality, Sir Doug Sahm, spent two years of his life way up north in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in the late 1980's. Doug had joined forces with Amos Garrett {Maria Muldaur & Paul Butterfield Bands}and Gene Taylor {Rick Nelson's Band & The Blasters} and of course Augie Meyers was involved as well.

This CD finds our almost frozen heroes, well...They are on fire here on this great disc. This music is a mix of old time country, folk, cajun, honkytonk, blues and 50's rock 'n roll. The CD liner calls this 'roots' music, well that ain't right, so don't go looking under any trees to hear this fine music. Amos and Gene do the majority of the songwriting here, but Doug has two of his tunes featured as well and this CD features covers by Hank Williams, Bob Dylan and Tony Glover to round it all out in proper fashion.

Canada was good for Doug, as this record won a Juno award in 1989. The Juno, is Canada's highest music honor, and Doug was now a national treasure in his new home. With: "Amarillo Highway", "Smack Dab In The Middle", "Drunk", "Queen Of The Okanagan" and really great rendition of: "Just Like a Woman." Doug and the boys, had the songs and the right spirit to capture Canada, and that is exactly what they did!

Well of course The USA wasn't giving Doug, Amos or Gene a second thought, as they would only play the newest records of Garth or Reba. Doug, just smiled and kept on playing some 'real' music. Instead of synths and drum machines that create today's country music sounds, Doug was happy with guitars, fiddles, accordians, pianos, stand-up basses, dorbos and real drum sets.

This is a great find. I wasn't aware of Mr. Sahm's Canadian years but when I saw this cd and saw the line-up of artists I knew it would be a good buy and it is. I had no idea this album even existed but I'm glad I stumbled onto it on Amazon. If you're not singing along to 'Drunk' on first listen I'll be surprised. There's a great loose feel to the album and the players all complement each other well. They were having fun and you will too. And what about that beautifully moody cover? It captures the essence of a lost time and a lost classic even though the music is sunnier than the cover hints at. I've been collecting Doug Sahm in all his guises for many years and this is a cracker.

Amos Garrett, Doug Sahm, Gene Taylor. When these guys get together it's a good show. I liked the "Live in Toykyo" better, but this is fine music by outstanding musicians.
