My motherboard has a serial port header (COM), but no serial ports. This was a cheap way to add a serial port to a modern computer. I needed a serial port to connect my old OBDII scan tool to my new computer. There are different length available, but this was plenty long for my computer.

The Star Tech com port has a little problem. I have these adapters that are 20 and 30 years old. Work fine. Problem is: The modern motherboard headers for the COM port has 1 of the 10 pins removed so that it lines up with the solid hole in the cable to com port. This omission makes it real real easy to install the connector to the MOBO header in the wrong order. Yes, I can figure it out and stick a tooth pick in the connector and break it off, but this is really a tacky was to correct a very bad obission by Star Tech. Someone needs to get in touch with Star Tech. They usually offer a sound and stable product.

Not much to be said about this which isn't already self-explanetory for those who are looking for these. It's simple, inexpensive, and does the job.

If you need to put a COM port on the back of your computer case, using one of the expansion slot blades, and your motherboard uses the standard 9/10 pin header, then this is what you need. 9" cable should provide all the length you need.

Does what it says on the label. Works great with my Gigabyte board's serial header. As always, check pinouts *before* buying, as there are two different serial header pinouts. That said, a simple device, and as long as you have a board with the correct one, I don't see how you could go wrong.

My Gigabyte motherboard came with a COM port header, but no bracket. Since I needed a COM port for my legacy fax modem, I bought this bracket. Both the header socket and header plug are keyed, so it can't be plugged in backwards. Works great.
