I installed these to replace my stock, yellowish, non-impressive Toyota FJ Cruiser headlamps. You can see the difference in a pic I posted, the drivers side is the PIAA and the passenger side is the stock lamp. The PIAA is visually whiter without the blue look. I have not spent a lot of time with them on dark country roads yet but the initial feeling is that they should be an excellent upgrade. I will post up once I have a few miles on them in the dead of dark!

Update July 2013. I love these lights and they are still going strong. Excellent white light for dark, dark country road driving. FJ should have come with white lights like this from the factory, they are a great match!

Update October 2013....they are still working GREAT!

I purchased several sets of PIAA extreme white bulbs of differing sizes, tried them, returned some to Amazon then purchased some of what I returned again. Why?

PIAA, Hella, Sylvania etc. seem to market the non-HID or Xenon automotive bulb products primarily by wattage and light temperature (Kelvin). I do not normally find a lumen rating which I would prefer since my objective in upgrading bulbs is to see further or brighter. My 1991 BMW uses traditional halogen bulbs everywhere so I hoped for better-than-OEM. Here are my conclusions after installation and usage.

I find "wattage" as in 55w=110w misleading. I do not believe, and my opinion, that the extreme white bulbs illuminate any further than the original 55w halogen bulb. I placed one PIAA in one of two fog lights and observed equidistant visibility with it and the stock Hella type 9006 55w bulb. Thus, "lumen" would be the measurement I would have preferred rather than watts.

The Kelvin scale color temperature is what you are really benefitting from. I tested with an original, probably 3200k bulb on the right side, a 4000k 'extreme white" on the left side and big difference! The whiter looking 'extreme white' or any 4000k rated bulb or higher will look 'brighter' but it simply is a higher Kelvin scale color. I probably agree with the marketing suggestion that a whiter white may help you see more clearly in the dark, not necessarily farther out.

But here is the catch and why I returned some "extreme white" bulbs. Placed behind a color lens such as a side marker or turn signal, the color is not 4000k but becomes yellow or red. So, I see no benefit to the premium price for a 4100k bulb in this instance.

These things definitely help you see the road better than stock lights. Sure they cost more, but they may just make the difference between seeing that deer in time or hitting it. Also, they make your car look pretty sharp a well. No, they don't have that stupid blue/purple look you see a lot, just a very bright white with a slight blue hue to it, which is not noticeable while driving, just when looking at them from the outside. Definitely recommend them.

Also, just to be clear, to your car, they are the same as any other H4 bulb. They use the same wattage and voltage. Though they are similar to HID lights in terms of light quality, they do not use the same mechanics, and do not need an HID ballast installed like HID conversion kits, which may also be illegal to use, as they often let too much light bleed up toward the eyes of oncoming drivers - nothing gets a cop's ticket-writing hand itchier than being blinded. You don't have anything to worry about using these bulbs.

These bulbs are SAE and DOT rated, 60W/55W standard wattage, so you won't get pulled over by the police for using off color or higher wattage bulbs, or burn your wiring by using higher wattage bulbs. The produce a very clean white (4000°K) light and are very bright compared to regular headlights. Comparing these to the 4000°K Sylvania SilverStar bulbs which I had before, these are whiter and brighter, which surprised me. If you are looking for a true white light, you need to stick below 4100°K in color, else you start to get into the blue and purple colors. These seem to be exactly what I was looking for. I gave them 4 stars because I don't know how long these will last. Most H4 bulbs are easy to swap out requiring no tools and about 5 minutes of your time.

If you are looking for a "white light" like I was to be comparable to an HID,Xenon or LED, you are going to be disappointed. As other reviewers have mentioned it is a stretch for PIAA to say Xtreme. They are not extreme white. Are they whiter than the standard halogen? Yes. I installed one and turned my headlights on to compare the two and there is a difference but the "yellow halogen look" for the PIAA (while much less prevalent) is still there. Now I will say the bulbs seem to have (how should I say) better reflective properties meaning objects the beam projects light on seem to have more definition and are a little brighter which is good but not anymore intrusive to oncoming drivers. I judge this by no one has flashed there lights at me. The factory halogen I was replacing was still a fairly new light to help visualize the comparison. In the end I am keeping these for two reasons. 1st: Replacing headlights in my truck is almost laughable for the difficulty and time it takes to do so. You have to remove the air cleaner housing on one side and the windshield washer reservoir on the other side to access the back of the sockets. Yes I said that correctly and I confirmed it with the dealer. It's ridiculous. 2nd: I am playing the odds with PIIA's reputation for long lasting bulbs which is another reason I purchased them. So it comes down to if your sole reason to buy is expecting real white light as we see on cars today with Xenon or HID's then don't buy. There is a discernible difference as these lights are more in line with halogens which after all is what you are buying. If you are wanting a high quality halogen that puts out a whiter (halogen) light from a quality manufacturer, then I do not think you will be disappointed.Read more ›
