I am really fairly new to soldering, mainly focusing on re-capping small new and old amplifiers. This means i am have to desolder existing capacitors before inserting and fixing the new ones. I have found desoldering more challenging and time consuming, not having much luck first tie around with either the desoldering pumps (could never get them fitted over the molten solder quick enough), and the desoldering wick (the first ones i bought were poor quality i think, later ones have been better).

This item has the advantage of being able to melt the solder AND vacuum it out with the same unit...which I found worked better for me. It's clearly not an industrial strength unit, deigned to do thousands of desoldering for example, but for me, a hobbyist at home, it is proving very useful.

I was looking for a REAL DESOLDERING IRON and found it, one that heats up the solder and can suck it away with the pump. I love this iron, its perfect for when im working on my Xbo 360 controllers and tech and mother boards. Does exactly what it needs to do and in no time. I love it.

For little microcontroller projects, I have been de-soldering components from obsolete motherboards (Ethernet and USB ports, etc).

I had been doing that using a regular soldering iron with a separate solder sucker tool.. not only did this require 2 hands, but the solder would start to cool between the time I moved the iron out and moved the suction tool in. This tool fixes this timing problem, plus I can operate the combined tool with ONE hand, plus I avoid wear and tear on my much nicer soldering iron. After you remove all the old solder, some parts with multiple legs will continue to stick... sometimes you can use the sides/top of the head to heat a few legs at a time, making removal easier (but note, the head is not meant for this... it's only sufficiently hot as a side effect of the tip. It works fine this way for me but with this trick your mileage may vary).

Be sure you have a piece of scrap cardboard nearby so you can safely eject the liquid solder. You don't want to leave it in as it will stop flowing so easily once the flux burns out of it. Mine has not clogged yet after 10 hours of use.

Worked fairly well until end of tip crumbled after little use. Also takes a while to heat up. Tips should be copper instead of pot metal.

I just got this Desoldering Iron to use on my Chevy truck Gauges to Desolder the bad stepper motors on the board. This tool worked like a charm on the first try. All 6 of them and 4 solder joints for each. Only needed 1 try for each joint. This much so much simpler then the past ways I've done this. How this holds up under heavy use? It worked great for me. No having to wait for each joint. I wasn't sucking up a ton of solder either. I plugged this and my soldering iron in at the same time about 10 minutes before I started the job so I wouldn't have to wait to start using them. You need to give these things a chance to heat up fully to use them. You don't want to set a Simi hot iron on your joint heating up everything else while waiting for the solder to melt. You should be on an off in a couple seconds that way the heat doesn't get far and damage something else.

Irons OK, tips are terrible. Removed about 5 caps just great, but then experienced not getting hot enough. The tip seemed to create a glaze over the outside and wouldn't even melt bare solder. If I put a strand into the tips hole, then it would melt. Replaced the tip and I was good to go for a few more components until the symptom resulted again. Tried using steel wool to clean tip, and seemed to help, but didn't last.
Overall the iron has great potential, just a pain dealing with the tips if your project exceeds removing a couple parts.

As far as vacuum bulb desoldering irons go, this is one of the better ones I've owned. The only problem I am running into is that amazon needs to find a vendor for replacement tips for the iron. I highly recommend this tool. Great tool at a fair price. You won't be disappointed...

As a follow up - Amazon does now have replacement tips for these.

For years I have used a separate handheld solder sucker with a regular soldering iron. No more! This unit is awesome. I used it to remove about 10 "through hole" mounted components from a generator circuit board. The iron heats up quickly, and removes solder like a pro. The tip never got clogged for me. I had it plugged in for about 30 minutes and it never felt like it was getting "too hot". I was concerned that heat would travel up to the squeeze bulb, but that didn't seem to be an issue. Just compress the bulb and hold it compressed. The tip has a small hole in it, so slide it over the soldered lead of the component. Let the solder melt and release the bulb. Remove soldering iron and place tip over a small container and squeeze the bulb to expel any solder.... repeat as necessary. Couldn't be much easier. I bought 2 extra tips to keep as spares. The diameter of the tip hole is small, but is good up to maybe 18 gauge wire? Anything larger won't fit.
