Mackie Big Knob Desktop Studio Monitor System]]I've read many reviews comparing the Big Knob to the Presonus Central Station. I can speak first hand to this. I've had a CS for 4 or 5 years. It's the main audio out for my studio. It went out over a month ago, no audio. Talked to Presonus tech support several times. They thought it was the power supply. They don't make them anymore for this first model CS. They said I was in great luck because they found the last used one in their shop and sent it to me free. 2 weeks pass with only one set of monitors plugged into my workstation instead of 3 I normally run for comparison. I get the thing and it turns out the power supply is not the problem. I have to return the CS to Presonus. 1 week shipping, 1 week repair, 1 week return. $50 shipping ground, $85 standard repair fee. Too long to work without a monitor controller, so I bought the Big Knob. It sounded very good at first connection. Finally got the CS back after about 5 weeks. Replaced the Mackie with the Big Knob. Here's what I heard.

The BK is very dynamic and offers more gain than the CS. It sounds good. But the CS is noticeably more transparent probably due to passive electronics. Quite noticeable on a well recorded acoustic piano for example. If you were just doing rock or hiphop, you might even prefer the BK. It has perhaps more umph. For clearity, the CS wins. Im keeping the BK because I can feed it audio from the CS line out to control a subwoofer, something I couldn't do with the CS alone while feeding 3 monitor sets at the same time.

I added the Big Knob to my small home-based studio. This was perfect for my multi-use, PC-based setup. While I have a TEAC TM-D1000 16 channel mixer for input duties, I was lacking in a simple method to switch between two different monitoring sets (Mackie HR824 mkII and a small set of bookshelf speakers to hear what mixes would sound played over a typical small home stereo) and different audio sources. The Big Knob allowed me to consolidate the "output" side of my workstation and have up-front, easy-to-reach controls for volume, signal routing and level indications. The two channel headphone amps/outputs are very welcome. The unbalanced signal paths and low-noise internal amplifiers keep the signal clean and true, adding no noisy artifacts or frequency response aberrations. Every input and output have level controls for normalizing signal levels. With the gain wide open and no signal, the internal preamps are dead silent. The Big Knob includes a phono input with built-in RIAA equalization and amplification for MM phono cartridges. There is a set up shorting plugs for the phono preamp input to use when this feature is not used; when the phono input is selected with nothing connected to it, the phono pre will produce a significant amount of white noise, this goes away when the turntable or the shorting plugs are connected.

The system is very solidly constructed, just like all Mackie products of this type. There is sufficient weight to ensure the thing will not slide around on the table, and won't get tugged about even with a full load of cables connected to the myriad rear panel jacks. The unit is supplied with two line cords, for USA and EU installations, and these cords are very generous in length.

I have a home studio and have used the Big Knob for about 2 years now. This is exactly what I was missing in my chain. Very well made, this thing is constructed like a tank and built to last. I can easily switch between my monitors and headphones with the push of one button and you always know where the volume knobs is. The Big Knob can also make things easier if you are using multiple inputs. My computer is hooked up to one input, my guitar to another and electric keyboard to another....and all with a push of a button or two I can easily select which combination I want to hear. Each input has a gain level knob associated with it. Two headphone jacks are included with individual volumes for each. I have not seen anything on the market that quite compares. Presonus has a similar unit, but it does not appear to be made nearly as well or useful despite it's glowing buttons. You can't go wrong with this at all. I bought mine off an auction site, so shop around for a good deal.

I love the tactile controls instead of fiddling around with twisting virtual knobs or panicking when I can't find the volume on a track. I'm using this with a Motu Traveler and Logic Pro X and it offers lots of options for configuring headphones, speakers, etc. So far, it's great! Very well made, hefty, nice looking and a pretty decent price.

The unit performs all the functions required. Very flexible input/output routing of sound signals for multiple connections to various studio elements. I use it in conjunction with an analog patch panel so I can run feeds independently to monitors and mixer, which allows levels to be adjusted independently as well. Must say I was surprised that the power cord has only 2 conductors, with no earth ground prong. I would have thought the standard 3-prong power cord would be effective in unifying the grounding of the whole unit, but I have had no problems with hum or noise. I do notice some tiny "static" shocks every so often when I touch the mixer or Big Knob chassis, so I am going to investigate doing a common grounding between various of the metal chassis in my setup. I would say 5 stars except I have no experience with any other product of this type, so cannot compare objectively. But this rating indicates my overall satisfaction with the product. No problems with operation, and no discernible effect on the sound signals passing thru - although my criteria are not stringent. For my purposes (amateur home studio) this works very well, because it greatly simplifies my recording and monitoring workflow.
