This kit contains a big ball (very burst resistant-- a nice quality ball), a pump and an exercise booklet. The exercises are graded beginner, intermediate and advanced and are either strength, flexibility or relaxation or a combination of them. The exercises are yoga-based in some cases (locust pose, half-locust, tiger pose) and use the ball as support. The other exercises are crunches, leg lifts, or squats for example.

The crunches are very effective. You can do a first set on the ball (rather than flat on the floor) and then a second set for lower abdominal muscles on the floor, lifting the ball by gripping it with the back of your legs while lying down on a mat. Wai Lana 152 Yoga Get-Started Kit This kit has a mat and block and strap--if you need a mat, this one is nice and long. I put it under the ball to grip my feet while lying on the ball.

The other nice part about doing crunches on the ball is that you can immediately relax the ab muscles by doing a back arch. I do a set of 25 followed by a stretch on the ball.

The intermediate exercises build you up to a bridge exercise (feet straight out on ball, arch from neck) that works the glutes and thighs. When you get strong enough to hold this pose, you can go on to the advanced and do the bridge with your feet planted on the top of the ball, pushing up from the feet with legs bent (as opposed to straight out.) Much harder. It doesn't seem to take long to build up to a stronger pose if used regularly.

The ball is compact and can be used in a bedroom or apartment if you have some floor space, enough for at least a yoga mat, or a bit more if you want to do a wheelbarrow or crawling along, rolling the ball back and forth under your body. In any case, the ball makes you use more of your muscles to balance and adds a sense of play or fun to exercise. Once you get used to the Yoga Ball (or Swiss ball) you may find it is a welcome break to get in some strength and relaxation exercise.
