I purchased this for a planted aquarium. It heats so evenly. It sounded like a great idea to use as an under the sand heating cable so the entire tank is evenly heated. It works so well. The plants took off growing like crazy. I am so glad I tried it. It has been a year. At first like any heater, I had to adjust it until the correct temp was being delivered and I have not had to touch it since. I am totally thrilled with this product. Any hydor product has been fine for me. I used the dial thermoset with this not the digital version.

Update: it is now 3-09-2013 and I have been using this heater cable for two years in a heavily planted aquarium with assorted tetras, crystal red shrimp and guppies. The plants and fish are all in great shape. I attribute some of the stability of the tank to the heater cable since it is even heat distribution with no fluctuations. I have experienced no issues so I am not sure what to think of the other reviews I am reading. Perhaps they did not also purchase the required heat regulator? It controls the cable with a dial to select the desired temp. You would need to let these components acclimate to room temperature before using, install them properly (not touching another length of cable on the bottom of the tank and not extending the heating part outside of the tank - the first black band is the line separation of non heated and the heated part of the cable which should be in the water). I could not be happier with this style of heating and have set up tank number two (saltwater) with it as well. It also is working well, one month out. I learned many years ago how detrimental heaters can be with the submersable type if not laced within a great flow of water to avoid uneven heat. With the cable heater, I have no worries and no complaints at all. If there was another rating 5 star plus, I would choose it.

I am using it on a 15 gallon aquarium freshwater and a 8 gallon aquarium saltwater

First of all, I think the length is listed incorrectly. The total length that receives heat is closer to 8 feet. This does not include the fourish foot long cord designed to be out of the tank, and it doesn't include about the last foot which doesn't heat up.

Secondly I have a 46 gallon display with ten gallons as sump and another two-three gallons in pipe/lines/tubes. I incorrectly ordered the wrong size. However, I did do some tests before I put this in my tank.

I put this in a five gallon bucket with a thermometer, the bucket was 68 degrees when I started, and it warmed up over the period of 10 hours to 82 degrees. Bucket was inside, it was a hot day. I kept it in for several days, and it dropped to 78 degrees that night(hotter than ambient temperature) but stayed more or less 78.2 degrees for next three days.

I then moved it to my 10 gallon tank, which is rose the tempurature only two degrees. The ten gallon tank has nominal waterflow(less than 90GPH) but it seemed to help prevent my tempuratures from rising accordingly. It's in the 46g tank now and has been in long enough that whatever parts of the cable weren't submerged have been covered with coralline algea and then covered in "reef gunk". In the 46g tank it makes water temperatures throughout the whole tank rise .2 degrees.

I don't have thermometers in my sand, so I can't rightly say if my sand is hotter, but it doesn't dissipate throughout the system like it should.

I would suggest this for non marine/saltwater tanks. Perhaps for freshwater planted tanks, but buy the largest size. aquarium heaters have built in safety features, so if your whole tank gets around 80-82 the heater will shutoff until it cools down several degrees before turning back on.

I have a Worm Factory Worm Composter which I keep in the garage and this heater plugged into an outlet during the winter and run through the one of the middle layers of the composter is enough to keep the worms from freezing over the winter. With compost on top and 3-4 layers of bins, it doesn't get so hot that I have to worry about damaging the plastic bins or driving the worms out from the heat but still maintains enough heat to keep compost in the top bin from freezing.

My cable developed a short after 13 months. Be careful to ensure that the cable doesn't kink as it exits the top of the aquarium. I believe that was the culprit in my case. It bears mention that I still have three other Hydor substrate heating cables in other aquariums that have been working anywhere from 5 months to 15 months without issue.

This works great! Keeps the temperature in the tank very stable and eliminates hot/cold spots. Also nice that it is hidden.
