Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Bumbling cop Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) is a terrible driver who loses his license and so recruits reluctant Belle (Queen Latifah) and her souped-up mega-cab after he stumbles onto a team of supermodel bank robbers. Several klutzy encounters and high-speed car chases ensue. If this sounds to you like the obvious result of a Hollywood pitch session ("Hey, let's pair some guy from Saturday Night Live with a tough-talking African-American and set them after babes on wheels!"), you're right; it doesn't mean, however, that you won't get in a few decent laughs before director Tim (Barbershop) Story's amiable time-killer falls into a steaming pile of would-be blockbuster buddy film cliches. The ever-ingratiating Latifah has long since proved her star charisma, and Fallon does an amusingly offhand parody of failed machismo. They're clearly having a good time together, and you could do worse than their company. There isn't a frame here that isn't cheaply recycled from some other lame action comedy, but if you grit your teeth for the very bumpy ride, you'll come out without too many scratches.--Steve Wiecking

Product Description

Sassy hip-hop star Queen Latifah brings hilarious attitude to this hard-driving, high-octane comedy action blast! Latifah plays Belle, New York’s fastest cabbie, whose taxi-driving expertise – not to mention her loaded-to-the-max vehicle – comes in handy when a fumbling young undercover cop (Jimmy Fallon) must crack a bank robbery plot hatched by a gang of supermodels! Don’t miss this tire-squealing, stop-on-a-dime comedy with a topflight cast of stars, including NYPD Blue's Henry Simmons, Ann-Margaret and supermodel Gisele Bundchen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Yellow Cab Fever!, October 9, 2004
By Smiley Smile (Boulder, CO United States) - See all my reviews

Jimmy Fallon is a cop who is such a bad driver he loses his license. Queen Latifah is a cab driver with a souped up Taxi who is a great driver. When Fallon comandeers Latifah's cab to stop a bank robbery, vehicular mayhem and fun break out! Add to the mix the fact the bank robbers are Brazillian Super Models and you have a surreal good time for all!
Ignore the critics who have cut this movie to shreds. Its pure escapist fun that rates four stars. Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars QUEEN TAXI DRIVER, February 10, 2006
By Michael Butts (Martinsburg, WV USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Taxi (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
TAXI is one silly little movie, but has enough laughs and some really innovative chase scenes, to be passing entertainment. Queen Latifah struts her stuff gloriously as novice cabbie Belle Williams who dreams one day of being a NASCAR driver. Jimmy Fallon is fun as Detective Washburn, a bumbling accident prone cop who couldn't drive a vehicle if his life depended on it. When Washburn loses his driver's license and is demonted to a beat cop, he shanghais Belle's cab to stop a robbery in progress. The robbers are four beautiful chicks who are pretty darned good at what they do and the rest of the movie finds Belle and Washburn trying to bring the girlies down.
It's all preposterous and loopy as heck, but Latifah and Fallon have a good rapport; Ann-Marget is fun as Fallon's floozy mother, obviously having a great time in a non-traditional role. Only Jennifer Esposito as Marta, Fallon's boss and ex-girlfriend seems miscast; it's hard to picture this buxom beauty as a cop, let alone a lieutenant.
But TAXI is fun viewing and you could do lots worse.

4.0 out of 5 stars QUEEN Latifah reigns supreme!, March 15, 2005
This review is from: Taxi (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
I must confess, this is the first of Queen Latifah's movies I've watched. I dunno why, but I was convinced I didn't care for her as an actor. I was wrong.

Latifah plays Belle, an adrenalin addicted cab driver who's anxious to begin her career as a NYC cabbie in her souped up Ford Crown Victoria, yet despite her female macho outer shell, she's really a romantic softie at heart. Her character, despite being larger then life (come on... how many overweight black females actually ride as a bike courier in NYC?) is also not the typical paper-thin, one dimensional empty shell that so many comedy roles are. And her role perfectly complements the male lead.

Jimmy Fallon plays police detective Washburn, and he does such a fantastic job of playing a pathetic little dweeb of a cop that more then once I wanted Latifah to pound his skinny little a@@. The comedy kicks in when Washburn, who drives worse then a 90 year old grandma, looses his license and gets a demotion. He manages to hook up with Belle and her crown vic, and together the two unwilling partners must team up to stop a band of bank robbers.

Okay, so there's nothing deep or profound about the movie, but, Latifah and Fallon are talented comedians and together they make for a lot of laughs and a fun ninety minutes.

Enjoy!
