I wish I had thought of this! These PlateMates (and their 5/8-lb little brothers) enable me to progress in weight in most of my exercises nearly every workout (even if it is only 5/8 or 1.25 lbs). I started out rehabilitating a shoulder injury. Micro-loading makes it a LOT easier to do that for rehab work, but these are also useful for pure strength or bodybuilding exercises, too. Read Rippetoe's book "Starting Strength" for a good discussion on linear progression and micro-loading.

These are pricey, but they are so convenient that you will not regret the purchase. For bi-lateral dumbbell exercises you will need (at a minimum) 2 pairs of the 1-1/4 lb plates, and 2 pairs of the 5/8 lb plates. This will enable you to go up in 1-1/4 lb increments. And if you want to go up in 5/8-lb increments, you will actually need 3 pairs of the 5/8-lb PlateMates. If you have two pairs of 1.25-lb PlateMates and a two pairs of 5/8-lb PlateMates you have the ability to do bi-lateral work starting from 5/8 lb up to 3-3/4 lb using only the plate-mates. Which means you don't need to purchase 3-lb, 8-lb, or 12-lb dumbbells.

These will not work with rubber-covered dumbbells. Good Luck and Happy Lifting!

First off, there appears to be two "generations" of this product. I own them both so I will review both. Regardless of the version you get, they are indispensable at letting you increase the weight when 5 lbs is just too much. In addition to micro-loading to help break a plateau, there are also many exercises that require less weight (lest you hurt yourself) so an increase of 5 lbs is just way too much to increase the load in a safe manner. Both versions are rugged and attach with three powerful magnets. They won't slip off easily. They are perfect for dumbbells but also good for slapping on a barbell load to micro-load. (Note: I use solid iron dumbbells and barbell plates; I have not tried them on foam-covered, rubber-coated, or concrete-filled weights)

First version: The first version I bought has a smaller footprint and the silver magnets are exposed on the reverse side. I can appreciate the change in the design in latter generations due to the possibility of chipping the magnets if abused. Mine however are still holding up fine and I use them quite frequently. They fit nicely on the ends of dumbbells as little as 15 lbs without getting in the way or protruding from the edges. They could certainly work on a 10 lb but you would have to be careful. When using them on heavier dumbbells (45 lb and up), the smaller footprint can be a little troublesome if you need to rest a dumbbell upright on your leg/thigh as this puts the full weight of the dumbbell on a smaller area. This can really be uncomfortable when using 60+ lb dumbbells.

Second version: The newer version is all-encased in a rubbery-plastic so the magnets are not exposed. This makes the reverse side completely flat as opposed to the previous version's "3 magnetic feet".

I was introduced to the concept of "microloading" through the writings of Stuart McRobert Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body(which I highly recommend). Previously, when weight training, I would work up to my best lifting poundages and would remain there indefinately. I now cycle my training intensity to build a gaining monentum troughout the cycle. As I reach my previous best poundages I make use of these "little gems" to nudge myself beyond prior sticking points in weight. I own both sizes of the PlateMate hexagonal weights(2pr. ea. of the 1 1/4lb'ers & the 5/8lb'ers). I own a complete set of hexagonal dumbells from 5lbs. to 50lbs. in 5lb. increments. Sometimes that 5lb. jump (10lbs. between the 2 'bells) is quite substantial. For instance on strict DB curls I would master the 15lb. 'bells and move up to the 20lb'ers where my form would completely break down to "cheat" the weight up out of necessity. I had always wished that someone would make an 18lb. 'bell. Now I just slap on a pr. of 1 /14lb PlateMates on ea. of my 15lb'ers and voila, 17 1/2 pound dumbbells. I'll even add the 5/8lb PlateMates to the outside of the 1 1/4lb units. Now I have 18 3/4lb. 'bells. You can see how in this manner the Jump from 15lb to 20lb now becomes something achievable through manageable, small increments of progressive weights. My only negative observation would be the lack of a 1 7/8lb. PlateMate. When stacking the small one onto the big one it makes for a pretty wide overall package and care must be taken during certain lifts to avoid knocking off the little ones. (They have some type of coating, maybe rubber, that makes the magnets hold a little weaker when stacked in this manner.) Overall experience was very satisfying, and I highly recommend this product to anyone interested in gaining strength or muscle.

These little beauties are rubberized and stick to your metal dumbbells with no problem. I was able to attach one to each end of the dumbbell, and remove them with no problem. They are strong enough to stick to each other for storage through the rubberized coating, so I presume they would stick to rubberized dumbbells just as well.
A great tool to add a little extra weight to help you break through those plateaus.
