It was probably a good thing that Sir Georg Solti put off recording a Brahms cycle until the late 1970's, for by then he had developed a particularly close rapport with his Chicago forces and matured considerably as a conductor. Potential listeners need not worry that Solti, the erstwhile firebrand, might fall into the trap of sensationalizing this most inward-looking of Requiems. As with his contemporaneous Brahms symphony recordings, Solti advocates a surprisingly sober and deeply considered approach to the composer.

Indeed, excessive sobriety has been a persistent criticism of this *German Requiem* since it was first issued. Yet, despite leisurely tempos, and an emphasis on the dark side of Brahms's scoring, Solti manages to convey the full impact of the work's great dramatic moments as well as the consoling message of its more serene passages. Indeed, the conductor understands that Brahms gives the listener much to contemplate in this most philosophical of Requiems, and for this reason he is in no hurry (as he could sometimes be in Mahler and Bruckner) to get to the "exciting" parts--thereby letting the tension sag elsewhere.

From the very opening, "Selig sind die da Leid tragen," Solti conveys a sense of spaciousness by building the orchestral palette upon an unusually rich and solid bass register (recalling Furtwängler and Bruno Walter). Yet he also manages to keep the often dense contrapuntal texture clear--indeed remarkably so in the great choral fugues that conclude the third and sixth movements. He is greatly assisted in these efforts by Margaret Hillis's superb Chicago Symphony Chorus; they sing throughout with gorgeous tone, soaring legato lines, and manage to negotiate every challenge of this fearsomely difficult choral writing with rare aplomb.

An old man told me, and this is after our love for classical music broke the ice in a dull conversation, that when he was in his 50's he attended the German Requiem at the Met in NY. An elderly gentleman next to him sat still and suddenly a single tear rolled down his cheek. My conversation-peer said: He looked at me and said: "This is the closest to heaven you'll ever get."

The Georg Solti edition offered here is outstanding, as to be expected from Mr Solti, a remarkable conductor. It's a must-have in any collection and the price is a safe bet. Highly recommended.

Klemperer (EMI) is generally acknowledged as conducting the finest account of A German Requiem ever recorded, and it is indeed monumental. Although somewhat dated in sound, remastering has resurrected much of the original sonics to the point that sound that is no longer a valid argument against its preeminence. Since Klemperer's original recording was released, many have tried (Karajan most successfully) but no recording since has pushed Klemperer off his Requiem throne... that is until Sir George Solti and his Chicago forces entered the competition. Universal Classics has reissued Solti's performance. The recording date is unspecified, but the original album was released in 1979 on Decca.

From the first opening notes, it is clear that Solti does not intend for this Requiem to be any also-ran performance. Did he ever? It is a solemn affair. The recording and remastering give us a vivid, moving account of one of Western music's most exalted choral works. The choral and orchestral elements fuse precisely. Each movement is recorded exquisitely. There are no weak links here. The Chicago Symphony Chorus performs strongly and the soloists are in fine voice. So is this the successor to the Klemperer Requiem throne?

Not quite, but Solti comes remarkable close. The recorded sound of the Solti Requiem is more refined than Klemperer's, but it not a "bigger" sound that underscores the monumental character of the work as well as Klemperer's recorded sound. The more refined sound of Solti, however, provides greater detail than in Klemperer's account. The soprano soloists are generally equivalent in terms of their impact on the performance, but Klemperer has the better baritone hands down. I see the Requiem in monumental proportions, but others may differ with that assessment.

Te Kanawa, Solti and CSO. Oh, and add Johannes. Why do you need a review? Last time I looked, tha planets in the solar system were aligned. With those 4 together, how could they miss? They didn't. This is a terrific performance.

This is one of my all time favorite works and this is a beautiful performance. "How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place" envelops one in its glorious waves of sound and bathes one in its aura. I love it.
