We just recently began putting out food for birds. We started with a cheap tube feeder with plastic ports and perches. After the squirrels chewed all of the ports out and we had to buy another one to replace it I knew we needed a metal feeder. After searching for metal bird feeders online I found the Droll Yankees brand.

We narrowed it down to the A6 or the B7 because we favored the look of the Classic series. Ultimately we bought the B7 for it's larger seed capacity.

When it arrived I was very pleased with build quality. Polycarbonate tube is very tough; it does not squish easily. It is also very clear, not hazy looking like cheap feeders in stores. The finish on the ports and perches looks durable. I did have to loosen the ports and adjust the perches when it arrived. One of them was only sticking out of the tube 1/4 inch on one side and 2 and 1/2 inches on the other. This can be easily adjusted after loosening the ports. The base is securely affixed with screws and is threaded to allow a seed tray to be mounted.

We hung the feeder late one night and the next morning the birds were already visiting it. We did hang it in the same place that our previous cheap feeder was hung.

I have one gripe with this feeder. There isn't enough clearance between the bottom feed ports and the seed baffle. After the birds eat the seed out of the bottom ports more seed does not fall in to replace it. We are using the Wild Birds Unlimited Supreme mix (black oil sunflower, sunflower chips, safflower, and striped sunflower). I removed the seed baffle it has eliminated this problem. Because of this I have only given this feeder 4 stars. If they had moved the bottom ports an inch higher from the bottom this wouldn't have been an issue.

I really like this feeder due to its solid construction, appearance and seed capacity. It is very easy to fill as well as clean. Likewise, the birds all flock to it readily. The only gripe I have is the same as Chris C's observation: There is a baffle or seed diverter device at the base of this feeder that essentially makes the bottom ports mostly useless. If the ports were higher or the seed baffle was lower, this would not be a problem. Like Chris C, I ended up removing the baffle. This was not as easy as I anticipated - you really have to squeeze the polycarbonate tube just right in order to remove the metal piece that holds the baffle in place; then slide the metal piece of of the hole and remove the baffle. However, you then need to place the metal piece back in place as it holds the ports in place as well. Removal of the plastic baffle then left a hole an opening at the bottom of the feeder since it also served to hold the seed in place. I ended up flipping the baffle upside down and using it as a cap to hold the seed. In any event, do not let this minor quibble deter you from purchasing this otherwise great feeder. Aside from that issue, I am very pleased and would certainly consider buying another.

Just came back to order another one. This makes eight.

I learned many years ago that no feeder I could find surpasses the Droll Yankee's. I love 'em. I got my first one this size as a gift from my mother 35 years ago. It's a tad discolored from exposure to sun and weather, but 100% functional. I bought 4 more same size and later 2 of the super large gallon size. Used them for the past 20- 30 years or so. This past winter we had so much snow and so many hungry birds, I felt the need for another and naturally it had to be a Droll Yankee tube feeder. In the past I had purchased other brands and styles of feeders. The only ones still with me are the Droll Yankee tube feeders. Need I say more about durability? And, the minor assembly that was required was a snap! No tools needed.

They have changed a teensie bit since my last purchase (in the 80s), and I was pleasantly surprised. Changes were for the better. (Added a baffle on the bottom to prevent unreachable seed from collecting and spoiling.) They retained the "armored" feeding ports, preventing squirrels from chewing and damaging the ports.

The birds love it. It holds about 2 quarts of seed. I mix my own - about 3/4 Black Oil Sunflower, the other 1/4 a mixture of Peanut chips and Safflower seed. (I use a separate special feeder for the Niger/Thistle seed for the finches, although sometimes I add a handful to my sunflower mixture) No wasted seed as there often is with some purchased mixtures. Here in SE Pennsylvania, I attract Chickadees, Titmice, Nuthatches, numerous varieties of Sparrows (Chipping, House, and others), Goldfinches, Carolina wrens, House finches, Purple finches, Cardinals, Blue jays, and more.Read more ›

I have been buying droll yankee bird feeders for many, many years (different sizes for various birds.

These feeders are made to last (even with many squirrels competing for the food).

Over the years they have improved them so they are not such a burden to clean. In fact,
they are quite easy to clean.

I tried others but replaced them quickly because they did not last. This is the only bird
