You usually hear about circle hooks as gear for catfish or stripers or pike or oceanic big game, but the small sizes work great under a bobber at the bluegill pond. Whether you're after a stringer of keeper-sized 'gills or just a fun afternoon with the kids, small circle hooks (size 10 or 12) catch fish at least as reliably as traditional J-shaped Aberdeen hooks, with far fewer fish hooked in the guts or gills.

Here's the problem with J-hooks. Sunfish can easily strip the bait off a big hook without getting caught, while they're prone to swallowing small ones and getting deeply hooked. Circle hooks, on the other hand, are designed to slide out of a fish's gullet without digging in, so they reliably hook the fish in the jaw instead. (In theory-- more in a bit.) You can have it both ways-- you can use small, nibble-resistant hooks without losing all of them in the guts of your catch. As an added benefit, they set themselves under light tension, whether from the fisherman reeling it in or from the fish pulling away.

I used size 10 hooks with red worms under a slip bobber, and they worked well if not quite miraculously. Most bites ended with a capture, and I never lost my whole worm to the nibblers. Most of the fish I caught, from lovely eight- to nine-inchers in breeding coloration to two-inch fingerlings, were hooked cleanly in the jaw. I went home with a full stringer and a smile. Sad to say, bluegill gullets do have enough, um, topography to catch a circle hook-- though I didn't gut- or gill-hook a single one, I did hook several in the soft flesh at the top of the the throat cavity.

Trying my hand at creating my own Sabiki Rig. These in 8 size seem just about right.

Why make my own? Have you noticed how many times you've lost the hook on a store bought Sabiki? Aren't you curious what is snapping the line so fast that you can barely feel it? I'm making a wire lined Sabiki Rig. It might not work but why not try. I'm guessing that what is snapping the line fast are some larger Spanish Mackerels. If it works, I'll try to update.

already have caught a 30# Blue Cat off of these (going to try to get a 60#+ next year). Definitely very strong, and sharp. Additionally, the gap is wide enough to actually hook a fish (not always the case with circle hooks). I purchased the 8/0, but probably should have got the 9/0 (they seem slightly smaller than other 8/0 hooks). Additionally, having the point in-line helps if you drift fish. I have yet to get a serious snag with one of these hooks.

Looking for a wider gapped hook after losing a couple large catfish last year due to a bad "turn-in" from smaller circle hooks. The black nickel is just a plating, not solid. I know this because I manually offset all my circle hooks and the finish shattered on these, not a big deal. Also did a break test, they held up quite well. I'm a pretty strong guy and had to use some force to snap them, doubt I will lose a fish to a hook break with these. Snell knoting works well with the inline no-eye snell or the standard uni-knot snell, by which I mean the hook hangs and pulls nice and straight even for a straight eye design. Nothing over the 10lb range brought in on one yet, so I'll update if they meet expectations on 50+ lb fish.

I reordered the same hooks as I had before but the design has changed. I snell my own hooks and the other designed with the angled back eye made for a better hook angle in the water. Cold weather set in after these arrived so I didn’t get much chance to try them. Hopefully they will still maintain the same bite to catch ratio.

They are fishing hooks, so they are pretty basic. They are strong, very sharp, and held up well to 2 weeks of saltwater fishing. The circle design helped with ensuring good hook ups and reduced gut hooking the fish. Excellent product, and will stock up again.

Bought these for drift fishing crappie. Couldn't be happier with their performance. I had very few misses and 90 percent were hooked in the corner of the mouth. This size hook is perfect for this type fish as it prevents swollowing and makes releasing them unharmed, easy.

these are very sharp hooks, extra fine is right. I bought the 10's and will probably get the 8's also. I didn't catch anything on these hooks but it might be my leader was too long for that day's conditions. I'm using these with powerbait dough for trout and not sure if circle hooks are the right hook. Circle hooks have increased my catches in saltwater but untested in freshwater.

I'll update as I test these. they look great!
