I got this to install an after market radio to replace the OEM unit that stopped working in a 04 Suzuki Vitara. The finished install works and doesn't look too bad, there is a small gap between this and the factory trim ring where I anticipate dirt collecting, could put some black weather strip in the gap but it is not that big a deal. This kit is intended to work for several cars and their is no indication as to which part is intended for which car. I wasted a bit of time playing with the ISO style side brackets before I realized they aren't intended for this particular vehicle. It appears the metal DIN cage (included with the radio) is the intended mounting method. There is not enough space between the opening edge and the top of the storage compartment to bend back the DIN tabs (or "wings") to securely hold the bottom of the DIN cage in pace. I had to resort to thick 3-M double sided tape between the cage and the top of the storage compartment. Also, the tabs on a plastic spacer that fits in the opening are in the perfect place to interfere with the only "DIN wings" that worked so the plastic tabs had to be cut off. The spacer is held in place by the DIN sleeve so one wonders why the tabs are there in the first place. There are several other tabs, probably included for other vehicles that had to be cut off as well. If I had to install in another vitara I wouldn't buy this, I would start with a piece of 1//8 aluminum plate I already have, used the old radio as a template for the size and mounting hole locations and cut a hole for the DIN sleeve that came with the radio and paint it black. This would have been faster then waiting for this to be delivered and would have been about the same amount of work.Read more ›

This kit worked well in a 2003 Malibu. I gave it four stars only because the lower compartment (if you use it) could be a little more level. It has a bit of a dip in it. It really looks fine though and blends well with my dash. The instructions told me what to do for my vehicle. For some reason I don't think the instructions mentioned this product working for a 2000 or earlier Malibu. I had a '97 before and feel the dash is the same as the '03 but it could be different.

After a couple of hours of playing around with the side pieces that are supposed to hold the radio in place I gave up and built a small wedge to fit under the radio and hot glued it to the radio and the CD pocket under the radio that is part of this kit. Works good now but those weren't in the instructions. I bent the tabs on the din unit and that and the bracket I glued in holds it in place just fine.

I spent a couple of hours going over the instructions and trying to make the parts fit like what was illustrated. I felt like I'd been smoking something - nothing makes sense in their instructions. I finally got the hot knife out and carved the damned thing up and made a bracket of my own which works much better than these puzzle parts as provided.

If something else is available pass on this garbage. I will say the wiring harness was specific to my 2003 Tracker and worked great. I soldered the wires together and protected them with heat shrink and stuck a wiring loom protector on it. Plugged it into the car and it works like a charm - all four speakers.

As a side note - I discovered the problem I've had with the stock head unit. I had removed it to trial fit the new unit and found I needed to make a short trip out of town. Since I like my radio/music and the new unit wasn't ready to go I stuffed the old unit in without attaching the screw-on ground wire hoping it would all work. It worked without the static I've been putting up with for a few years while on cruise control. Mostly the static was in AM - and yeah I know - who listens to AM? ME! Go figure! Got a new radio now so all is good and it plays MP3s on CD and USB thumb drive. Clarion CZ501 sounds great and paired with my cell phone in like 2 seconds.

As others have noted, go to Metra's website for the directions. Mine came broken, and in trying to sort out how to still use it, I cut off the wrong tab on the main piece. It was broken because this packs in a plastic bag and somewhere along the line it got mashed, breaking one side of the single-DIN mount with the pocket in it. Which, it may not have worked even if I hadn't cut the wrong tab, the same tab on the other side was already broken.

Not the seller's fault, either, the bag is not clear plastic and with all the black plastic parts inside I couldn't tell it was broken until I opened it.

This kit makes no sense really, it could be divided into two and sold cheaper. You only need the piece with the pocket and a couple other trim bits for a single stereo. You don't use that piece if you do a double DIN install, just three of the other pieces.

But in this case that saved me, I sat down and looked at it again and determined I could install my stereo using the upper double DIN mount. I wanted to do the lower, but the dash in my 2002 Express would need to have a lug inside trimmed down for the lower position to work. Screws supplied with the radio worked fine to hold the side brackets on. I think the whole install only took about 20 minutes.

My seller was nice enough to refund the money since the single DIN mount was broken, so it ended up being free. So I'll live with the hole in the dash for now. I can just make a larger pocket up to fit in there at some point. Good place to stick extra fast-food napkins.
