The tuner/amplifier that I use for my surround sound system has only one optical audio input. However, both my dvd player and my satellite receiver each have an optical audio output. Prior to obtaining this device, I had to switch these two cables manually.

This switch works very well. It will switch between three optical inputs. The selector locks into place when proper alignment is reached for the desired input source.

This is a great labor saver, and a cost effective option to choose rather than face the expense of purchasing a new tuner/amplifier.

Hooked it up and the product works great. I saved myself the hassle of going behind the tv and switching wires around each time I wanted to change the audio source, now all I have to do is turn the knob on this device. Perfect for set-ups that have multiple audio sources and few digital inputs on the receiver. I'm using this with my digital cable box, PS3, and Divx DVD Player. Great product.

I don't understand all the negative comments about this switch, because mine works 100% and there is everything to say that is good about it possible. The quality is also fantastic, the switching mechanism is tight and direct and never gives me any trouble, so what's not to like about it? I read here where someone actually took it apart to "fix it" and/or see what's inside of it, and that is just crazy! WHAT do people buy things for anyway? I just don't get it at all...sighhh. If they don't work, simply call or email Amazon.com Customer Support and get it replaced, that's all you have to do!!

My use is simple, and the switch works to give me perfect, sync'd sound control on my Samsung HDTV, a Samsung BluRay Player that I use for listening to Pandora Radio a lot+ Netflix videos much more than I watch BluRay movies--the performance is flawless from the switch. The 3rd item connected to the switch is my Asus Xonar Essence PC Sound Card, and the sound variety coming out of my OEM PC is many sided and varied, so the switch has to work correctly or I would be getting distorted sound when I mix audio tracks, play iTunes and AppleTV movies, videos and music of all sorts, plus the sound from the PC itself is important because I have audible warnings and notifications for various things and it's necessary to operate my programs and applications too. Score? 100% faithful, true, accurate, and exceptional sound from my PC through a set of Logitech HD speakers that get a lot of service in my studio, and I just couldn't expect more from this Nyrius SW100 switch for my optical/digital sound! It works fantastic every time, without fail, and for about $20 or so shipped I don't think anyone will go wrong, or be disappointed with this item!

So what's all the fuss about anyway?

As with others, I had too many optical sources and not enough inputs. this device worked great at first but after a while, I think it started attenuating the optical signal as my decoder could not detect a signal. I think the rotating switch is to blame...maybe it gets dirty over a few months.

I unfortunately could not get this device to work. I tried multiple brands and lengths of optical cables (all which worked when directly connected) and couldn't get any sound through the selector switch. Not sure if I just purchased a lemon or if other people are having the same issue; nonetheless, take caution when buying.

Instead, I found the "4x2 remote control digital optical TOSlink audio fiber optic selector switch" to work perfectly! Its more expensive, but everything about it is nicer (plus it works)

Right at first this thing worked perfectly, but within 48 hours I started having major issues with it, lots of degradation of quality and more often than not just straight not working. It looks like its just hit or miss if you get a unit that works well, but the odds don't look good. If you need something right now cables to go makes one that has a little better track record, but not much. I'd recommend spending a little more and getting a digital switch box instead. They are a little pricey, but they will work.

Just received this switch and hooked it up between the TV and Blu-Ray player. The audio was intermittent (cutting in and out). When I hooked up the cable directly from TV to Blu-Ray, there were no audio issues. This product does NOT keep a good audio connection.

I bought this after seeing the positive review composite for it and without many other options, I didn't spend time to look at the negative ones or read the vague glowing recommendations. Whether this fails a month after you use it or never works at all, this product is not a valid solution for people looking for a digital audio switch.

You can visibly tell how much signal you are losing when it passes through the switch by plugging in a lit device into one of the inputs and then looking into the output opening. The red light is incredibly dim(all three inputs were barely visible after passing through the switching mechanism) and by the time you pass it through another 6 feet of Toslink, you have nothing on the other end. I don't think there was anything defective about mine other than the design. It has been a long time since I took optics, but the light is having to transition mediums 4 times before it gets converted using this and I would think that would cause a ton of degradation. I am going with a powered solution over passive.
