Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for rooms up to 300 square feet, this portable air conditioner features a 10,000-BTU cooling capacity, a 10,000-BTU heating capacity, and an energy-efficiency rating of 11.45. The unit also functions as a dehumidifier, removing up to 38 pints of moisture from the air per day (the dehumidifier functions automatically in AC or Heat mode). During the heating or cooling process, its self-evaporating system extracts water from the air into the unit. Most of this water then gets recycled and used to cool the cooling coils for more efficient operation. The air conditioner comes equipped with a 3-1/5-pint water tank and two fan speeds, as well as a digital thermostat, digital temperature display, and remote control, which makes it simple to use. Choose between continuous operation or the programmable timer, which can be preset up to 12 hours. The unit also provides a 62- to 90-degree F thermostat, a washable air filter, an activated carbon filter to help remove odor, a built-in water tank or extended water tube for continuous drainage, and casters for convenient mobility. Other highlights include an LCDI plug, fire-resistant PVC plastic housing, a rotary compressor, directional air discharge louvers, and an extendable exhaust hose (up to 5 feet). The unit requires exhaust hose installation, and all standard accessories come included. Weighing 65 pounds, the air conditioner measures 16 by 15 by 30 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

4.0 out of 5 stars 2 for 1 Pretty Good. Fan noise Kills 1 star, maybe a deal killer, May 3, 2008
This is not my 1st portable however this is my first combo heater and air conditioner.

Compared to previous experience, this unit has a loud fan!

My limited experience with the heat function has it appearing to be a mini-heat pump! It sure blew cold air out the exhaust. Bad news if you don't have it vented :-/

Max. Plate rating is 6A @ 120VAC. I while have not put a watt-meter on it, and doubt it goes beyond 5A. I think the 10,000 BTU rating is a little generous.

As required by US Federal law, it has a GFI on the end of the cord. This can be an issue in dry climates as the ground can literally dry out!

The air filter is typical, which is to say stock cheap and cheesy. Spraying with something like endust helps.

If I could find a quieter 2 in 1, I would replace this unit. Until then, I hope it keeps functioning.

2009 update. Units of this type use a sort of an open evaporator tray, not unlike a refrigerator. Using a # of hours per day requires a drain hose (standard garden thread) to be attached at the bottom (after removing screw plug).

Otherwise you will see a red light, and nothing else until you drain the unit. As the drain is on the bottom and rear, consider getting the unit up 1M/3Ft to get a drain going or at least a bucket.

It shut off on me in the middle of the night, during a several day cold spell, until I drained the unit.

Yes, it is still on the noisy side. Will heat/cool a room up to about 12x14 in a milder climate. I guess 10x12 in harsher weather.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ineffective., June 9, 2008
By Ryuji Suzuki (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I bought this AC partly due to its higher energy efficiency rating. However, my old window AC worked better, although the old one had a lower energy efficiency rating, a lower BTU rating, and the same wattage rating. By this, I mean portable AC does not cool the air as effectively as the window mount AC.

If you can somehow install a window mount type AC unit, don't buy this. This AC is probably useful for spaces wherein a window AC cannot be used, such as basement, attic, photographic darkrooms, etc. Even then, buy a unit that uses comparable electric power to the window model; don't trust the BTU rating on these portable models. They may be a result of the trick of the measurement condition.

One good thing about this unit is that it keeps replacing a portion of the room air, so that the room air does not get the smell of the air conditioned room, even during a continuous operation of the AC. However, you could probably do this manually with a window type AC, if you open the window a few times a day.

This AC draws air from the back of the unit. Some of the air is used to cool the compressor and blown outside via the duct. In my experience, it is best to run this AC on slow fan (which still runs the compressor at the full power) and remove the cold air away from the AC by using another fan, so that the cold air is not wasted to cool down the compressor.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor at drying the air & very cumbersome to move, May 30, 2008
We have the WA-1220M model of this product (not RC & no heat). If you stand right in front on it, up to about 5 feet away, it's nice. However, it has several drawbacks:

1. It isn't very good at drying the air; evaporation is needed for effective air-conditioning (whether in your car or your home).

2. It must be drained of the water it does pull from the air, and draining the unit is very cumbersome. It comes with a small flexible plastic tube that has to be connected to the rear bottom of the unit; the other end must be lower in order to drain or the unit really does very little and although there's an indicator light that will come on if the unit is quite full of water, it's very rare that the light comes on (and it only does so LONG after the unit has stopped cooling the air). We have taken to wrapping a large towel around the far end of the tube to collect water that drains, but basically you must tilt the heavy unit backwards to try to drain it. This is not particularly effective but it must be done.

3. It has wheels, but it doesn't roll easily (it's hard to push or pull it in a straight line and the wheels are so small even getting over a low rug is difficult.

4. Moving the unit up or down a single step can be accomplished by one person but since the entire unit is made of very smooth, slippery plastic (it has handles but they're very shallow & not helpful), it's more safely accomplished with two people.

5. Consider that this unit, while mobile, sacrifices a good window seal. The large exhaust hose (which pumps the hot air outside) resembles a telescoping dryer hose that easily falls out of the backside of the unit and is awkward to extend evenly. The unit comes with a smallish piece of foam with a cutout hole for the hose. However, you are left with having to find some way to block the rest of whatever window you choose to put the hole into. We use a large carboard box panel and cut a hole out of, then duct-tape the box into the window opening to block out air seepage. As you can imagine, it looks pretty tacky.

We wouldn't buy this again.
