Ruben Gonzalez always struck me as the jazziest Buena Vista member, and it is exemplified on this collection featuring his pre-Social Club work. Most of this CD presents music that was produced in 1975, which the liner notes indicate was from his first solo album, though the pianist's musical legacy dates back to 1940s ensembles. Cuban music fans will dig these songs, but depending on how much you like jazz, you may not be interested in a quarter of this disc's tracks. Four numbers hail from a 1964 straight jazz date with trombonist Pucho Escalante. I find these selections fascinating for showing the breadth of Gonzalez's keyboard skills, but othes may not find similar enjoyment, so I have withheld a fifth star for this title. However, if you have enjoyed the Buena Vista Social Club CDs and the numerous spinoffs, all of these Cuban Essentials reissues should be right up your alley.
