Recently purchased this Dewalt Impact wrench to add to my tool collection. Not having a large enough compressor to go pneumatic, I made the obvious only other choice and went with electric. My father had a craftsman electric impact while I was growing up, so i'm using all those experiences to try and benchmark this purchase. While it doesn't seem to have as many rpm's as the craftsman, it does seem to be much smoother and has alot more torque. Removes lug nuts and rusted bolts with ease. Can't go wrong with Dewalt. Shipped fast, priced right. Overall, very highly recommended.

I really wanted to like this product. I really wanted it to work. I was going to use it to take off a crank pulley bolt (approx. 120ft. lbs of torque). I knew that I might be pushing it, but I didn't want to buy a compressor because I wanted something quiet.

After buying it, I took it home and was excited to use it. I decided to go ahead and use it to take off of my lug nuts. That's when the problems happened. It wouldn't take them off. I hand torqued the lug nuts to 85 ft. lbs. the day before. The day before I couldn't get the crank pulley bolt off with a breaker bar (probably over torqued from previous service), that's why I was in the market for this. The point is that it wouldn't remove something that was tightened at 85ft. lbs. If it wouldn't remove the lug nuts, it obviously wouldn't remove the crank pulley bolt.

I do not recommend this product at all, especially since it didn't take off my lug nuts. I've read bad reviews before of it, but thought people were simply biased towards air tools; they were right.

I've had this for about a year and it works great. I recently used it to strip apart a rusted Datsun 1970 240Z...it broke free and removed body bolts that hadn't moved in 40 years with ease...saving my wrists. If you're looking for a flashy Nascar speed wrench for your wheel lugs this may not be it. It IS a powerful electric impact wrench though. I have read the model 293 was souped up to replace the model 292 which had mediocre ratings. Best tool money I've spent in a while...saved me from having to buy a compressor.

I am an avid DeWalt fan. I have a DeWalt cordless drill driver that I had for over 10 years that is still going strong. I have a DeWalt miter saw that performs like a champ every time I use it. I even have a DeWalt flash light that I love, not to mention DeWalt drill bits and driver sets. I haven't had one bad experience with DeWalt, until now.

I needed to rotate tires to get ready to Winter so I purchased a Milwaukee impact wrench after realizing that my pancake compressor can't drive an air impact. Bought it at a local Home Depot, got home and it took the lug nuts out after about 1-2 sec of pounding. Not bad. Then I went online to research if DeWalt made an electric one (didn't see one at HD store). Sure enough, DeWalt makes'em and DeWalt wrenches are rated 45 ft-lbs higher than the Milwaukee ones! I continued to read and research extensively. I returned the Milwaukee one and I bought this impact wrench. I plan to use it several times a year for tire rotations and maybe some minor auto repair work so didn't want to spend money on a large compressor. I noticed several not-so-good reviews and many favorable reviews. I thought maybe the bad ones were just unlucky and being a loyal DeWalt fan I didn't hesitate to order this one.

I received the wrench a couple of weeks ago but it was below zero temp here for a while so I finally got to test it out yesterday when it was around 32. Took the unit out, put on an impact socket and tried on the same wheel that I hand-tightened with a torque wrench at 90 ft-lbs. The lug nuts wouldn't even budge. Ran it for about 5 seconds. Nothing. Tried on 3 different nuts and nothing. I know it takes more than 90 ft-lbs of torque to loosen nuts torqued at 90 ft-lbs but for a wrench rated at 345 ft-lbs, it shouldn't be a problem at all. The Milwaukee did it. I packed it back up. This one is going back.

I was slightly skeptical buying this. I was afraid it wasn't strong enough for the toughest frozen nuts. But now after using this for several months, I'm perfectly happy with it. I have not yet found a nut it wont break eventually. The worst case scenario I found so far, this impact had to beat it for 120 seconds before it began to rotate. Then another 60 seconds to spin it off completely.

However I did not have to go get the breaker bar and an extension pipe. This Dewalt beat on it, and beat on it, and beat on it till the nut could no longer resist. And that was only once. So I had to hold the trigger for 180 seconds. But that was the worst case scenario. And only happened once.

The good side. It didn't wind my lug bolt off in half.
I used to have a Milwaukee battery operated impact, 28 volt. That son of a gun, if the lug nut wasn't moving in ten seconds, it would twist any lug bolt in half. Just wind it and twist it till it broke in a few seconds. It was actually too strong for nut smaller than 15/16. My friends couldn't believe how fast my Milwaukee would twist a lug bolt in 2 if the nut was stubborn. Search on amazon for "Milwaukee 2763-22 M18 FUEL 1/2" High-Torque Impact Wrench with Ring Kit".

However stronger is not alway better. Do you want to remove the nut, or twist the lug bolt off?

Sometimes 5,000 impact medium duty impacts are required to break the nut without breaking the lug.
Its like reeling in a fish. You don't pull with all your might. You pull enough, and long enough to wear his resistance out and tire him out. As he gets weaker and weaker he gives up more and more and then you start gaining speed.

This is where this Dewalt has proven fantastic. Its strong enough, but not too strong.Read more ›
