I have been using Neocolor ll watersoluble wax crayons for face painting for 20 years now. Years ago I had reached a representative of the company in California (can't find this reference anymore) and was told the company approved it's use on the skin. The USDA doesn't because this is a Swiss product.
I have very sensitive skin and have painted thousands of children and there has never been a bad reaction.
I always use a towel over the child's shoulders though, it will stain! I really like how it dries so quickly especially if it is damp outside when you are painting. There are many wonderful professional facepaints on the market and I would use them if I was going to paint close to the eyes, but I avoid this at festivals anyway.
Since I prefer to use brushes or sponges I shave off the crayons into a palette well and press it down slightly then fill with DISTILLED water barely cover. The next day it is a heavy creamy paint and I smooth the paint out in the little palette wells. It will dry in a day or two, cover and store. After a day of painting I let the palette dry completely before storing, I use round covered tins found second hand.
I also scrub out little squares of paint on a small clayboard and I have a little portable "Palette" for easy painting on a hike or trip. It is such a wonderful paint but I wouldn't consider it a childrens product.

I purchased the water soluble Caran d'ACHE crayons of Switzerland from Amazon. They are indeed fun to work with. They are a crayon yet you can add a wet paintbrush to the colored picture and change it into a water color or use a damp brush on the crayon directly taking color from the crayon to the paper. Like using regular water color paints but taking up less room. Very nice product with or without water. They arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

I used these crayons to make an art quilt, and they worked fantastically! I love them! I experimented with the white muslin being wet and dry both, and dipping the crayons in water before using. All worked equally well. The effect is so wonderful.

I bought these because I wanted vivid color, not washed out color, when I added water. They blend well, they are easy to unwrap, they last a long time. I even used them to paint faces at a church Halloween party and also my kids for their costumes. I didn't have a costume this year, so I did my face as a tiger. I got so many compliments just Trick-or-Treating! The makeup did not flake, crack, or peel. It did not dry my face out, make me itch, or make me break out. I used oil-free eye makeup remover to get it off. Smudges before then were minimal. Soap and water should work just as well.
If you experiment with Zentangle and want to draw on yourself or your kids, you couldn't pick a better product.

I bought these for a little kids birthday party to use as face painting crayons. I tested them on my own skin a few days before the party, and the color stayed on for over 6 hours. The colors wash right off with a damp cloth or baby wipe. LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE!

I've been hearing about these for a few years, but I just never believed the hype. Believe it. These are amazing. I wish they'd been my first art journaling supply purchase. They are so thick and richly pigmented, and when you add water they come even more alive, and they move across the paper just beautifully (you have to use sized paper to get the best results). They are SO juicy wonderful, especially if, like me, you are ALL about the COLOR. They go down like a hard oil pastel and are slightly blendable even dry, so I can see why they're not called 'crayons', but pastels. I've tried watercolor crayons, and these are in a class by themselves.

These water soluble crayons are really a tool for fiber artists. Using them along with dying, stamping and printing you can create very subtle or very bold effects. I only wish they had a set containing the more subtle colors I know this company makes. Seal you creation with transparent acrylic fabric base paint and it can go in the wash.

I used these pastel water based crayons at a school carnival to paint faces. It was awesome! They were much easier to use than the typical brushes and thick mucky paint you find at stores. I dipped the crayon in water and the paint went on very smoothly. The best part is that these are non-toxic and wash off easily with soap and water.
