"Jazz Shots from the East Coast" is a three part collection of jazz videos. On volume 1, the selections are uneven given the balance of legends, obscure gems and unknowns. Mostly coming out of public domain vaults, the video quality is poor. No attempt was made remaster these selections. Fortunately the audio quality is on average, good. The first two songs feature the Bill Evans Trio. The second song is his great, 'Waltz for Debby.' Next up is the Ahmad Jamal Trio on grainy black and white. The third act features a forgettable performance by the Phil Woods Quartet. Thelonious Monk is the first heavy hitter on "Jazz Shots from the East Coast." While it's rough footage, it's still a treat to watch Monk play live. The band plays a good version of 'Blue Monk,' complete with Monk's signature foot floppin'. Keeping the theme, Johnny Griffin next plays 'Monk's Dream.' Despite what seems to be a lousy VHS transfer, it's actually a good retelling. Oscar Peterson's performance is one of the DVD's gems. On the keys, Peterson is spellbinding! This is vintage footage from the glory days. Fortunately, the editors included three Duke Ellington songs. Most likely from '40s, the cinematography on the first two songs is precious. Through audio hiss, the orchestra plays 'Mood Indigo' and 'Sophisticated Lady.' In contrast, 'Take the A Train' is played by a trio. Ellington's amazing phrasing as a pianist comes through on all three selections. The strangest material here is by Keith Jarrett's group. Beginning with 'Tagore,' Jarrett plays the piano's interior strings. Packed with flower power free jazz, 'Passin' Thu' shows what experimental jazz in the '60s was all about. There is very little remaining footage of this fleeting moment in jazz history. Jimmy Smith follows the freak out.Read more ›

This collection has fine mid-career Bill Evans, decent Oscar Peterson with his first drummer Ed Thigpen, Ahmad Jamal before he learned the virtues of silence, Monk in Monkish form, Phil Woods at his technical best (though not swinging), and some great Ellington (even with a band minus Johnny Hodges). But be prepared for the plain awful when we get to a young Keith Jarrett (tuning, rather than playing, his piano), joined a young (but no better) Charles Lloyd, with Jack DeJohnette also incriminated in this sad attempt at jazz performance (wait until Keith pulls out a soprano sax to duet with Lloyd).

What transpires during Keith's set is so hokey, so amateurish, so pretentious, so plain "jivish" that some may find it entertaining. I would advise applying the splicer (or at least the Fast Forward switch). On the other hand, the next clip is some of the most plodding Jimmy Smith I've ever heard ("Mack the Knife" without a single key change), followed by a poorly filmed B&W clip of Oscar--in fact, it's appalling both visually and aurally (Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen are inaudible--they may as well not have showed up). Oscar is followed by the prodigious multi-horn virtuoso Roland Kirk, who receives the same insulting representation of his talents as Oscar (at least Roland was capable of being a one-man orchestra in himself).

The film has no ending--it simply cuts out, mercifully, at the end of Kirk's solo. There are no closing credits. Shame on Amazon for charging a rental fee for this travesty.
