As a drop in LED upgrade for my 4 D cell Maglite the TerraLux TLE-6EX is not only affordable but very powerful. You can get more lumnens at a higher cost but they won't work with the Maglite focusing reflector. On tight focus I can clearly illuminate objects outside at over 100 feet. Very happy with this bulb and it brought my old battered flashlight into the 21st century.

This blanket statement in the (sparse) description & title is very misleading: "Fits MagLite 4-6 cell flashlights". Not true.

Older C/D cell mag-lites use a traditional incandescent bulb that looks very similar to a traditional screw-in light bulb. More precisely, they're miniaturized versions of the bulbs you put into car turn-signal enclosures or brake lights.

HOWEVER, the newer C/D cell mag-lites now use the same type of bulbs you find in the mini-mag-lites, like the single double-A or triple-A battery types. These bulbs are essentially a formed piece of glass with 2 stiff & straight wires sticking out the bottom. You insert the bare wires into 2 sockets on the flashlight to replace the bulb.

The end result is that these LED upgrades WILL NOT WORK in the newer C/D cell flashlights, as the retaining collar will not hold down the bulb in its enclosure. It's sized for the older incandescent bulbs. I wish there was something in the description or title that clearly stated that. At this point, the return shipping for this item is about 1/3 the cost of the product, so it's not worth my time & effort to go through the trouble.

I was on may spare bulb in my 4D Mag-Lite when the original failed after I dropped the light, and decided this was the way to go after seeing the "glowing" (ahem) reviews. Installs just like the original bulb, no muss, no fuss. Seems to provide about 10-20% brighter beam, but that could be because of the whiter light. Retains the beam focusing capability of the Mag-Lite, as well as being able to remove the reflector to use as an area light (which I DO NOT recommend). This LED is SO BRIGHT as a "point source" that looking directly at it is a bad idea (as opposed to diffused LED's used for home lighting). These latest "high-output" LED's are an offshoot of solid-state lasers, and they act that way.
Let it be said that this would make a great companion for a walk in a dark alley, as combined with the heft of a 4 (or 6-cell) Mag-Lite, you would have the capability of temporarily blinding, then (if necessary) conking an assailant over the head and making a getaway (your mileage may vary, there).
I'm sure that this will outlast any incandescent bulb, and if it saves batteries as well, it's worth every penny.

UPDATE: 3-17-13
I downgraded this to ONE STAR, because the LED went to a dim, useless state (I replaced the 4 D-Cells to no effect)

I estimate that over all this time, I may have used the light for about 2 hours of actual operation time - very disappointing.

I'm going to see if I can find a different, longer lasting version of this - the idea is still good, but it's likely that better heat-sinking for the LED is needed for a longer operating life.

This slid right in and worked immediately, with no modifications needed. It's bright and much better than the standard bulb. I'm very happy with this one. I don't know how anyone can say this is dimmer than the original bulb that the maglite comes with, unless they received a defective one. Mine is much brighter.

OK I admit it, "My name is Bob and I'm a Flashaholic". I have to work nights on some occassions and spend a lot of time in basements and other dark places figuring out how to wire homes and businesses. Customers and especially yuppie customers never have a flashlight, so I carry several in my truck. Have you ever been in a basement at night when there is no power - it is DARK! I have an old 4D cell Maglight that I like to keep in the truck for a couple of reasons. Its big and heavy and made out of metal. So I installed this bulb and it was an easy replacement. This light is even brighter than the Dorcy 180 lumen cyberlight which is also an excellent product. I like this replacement bulb a lot and it is VERRRY bright and can be focused with the Maglight. The maglight is still huge and heavy but now it super bright. The perfect urban flashlight.

I recently purchased a 6 D-cell mag-lite. i bought the TerraLUX LED Conversion Kit. I received it in reasonable time and i was pleased for free shipping. The LED installed with no problems and i was pleased to see an almost double in brightness. It was great for five minutes, everything i expected it to be. i was shining it on the a white floor and it turned blue then off. I immediately removed the LED. Nothing visably wrong with it, it was hot but i assume it burnt out even though the product claims LED will not burn out.

I own an adjustable 4 D-Cell Kel-Lite purchased sometime in the 80's. To help other owners pin down the genre, it was manufactured in Barstow, CA, is somewhat adjustable (but not like a Mag-Lite) and the dark spot in the center of the beam is mitigated by stacking washers under the retaining collar to push the incandescent coil further down to change the focus of the reflector. For serious collectors, the serial no. is AK101202.

This light bulb arrived today and I immediately installed it in the Kel-Lite. It is about as bright as the krypton bulb which it replaced, but has fewer dark artifacts in the center of the beam and a slightly crisper edge. This LED still gives enough spill light that outside the main beam focus, one could see movement in a room or in a yard, just like with the original incandescent bulb.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I purchased a 1-watt Nite-ize LED for one of my 3 D-Cell MagLites from a big box outfitter in Fairbanks, AK. It was the first LED replacement bulb I had seen. Compared to that 4 or 5 year "old" technology LED, this TerraLUX MiniStar5 140 Lumens Extreme LED is slightly dimmer and certainly yellow-greenish in color. When it gets dark, I may shoot comparison pictures so you can see the difference. With the dimmer light, expense, and color disappointment, I started to give 3-Stars to this bulb, but then I remembered, as I spent hours reading LED bulb reviews, how happy I thought I would be IF I found a LED replacement bulb for my Kel-Lite.
