A fantastic keyboard that excels in the highly specialized role I use if for; having a PCB mounted set of keys, one can access the individual mounted mechanical keys, pop them open via clever use of mini binder clips, (and a couple pairs of pliers to bend the clip wire into the proper shape) bent to hook into the fasteners of the keyswitch, remove the spring inside, use wire cutters to cut both ends of the spring and one or two coils, reinsert, test, and BAM instant touch-type keyboard! I don't do this for all the keys just the alpha numeric ones and the enter, tab, backspace button, and I have to say since there are NO actual 'light touch activated' keyboards on the market today, this is a GODSEND for people with osteoarthritis of the joints! I also purchased a hundred or so cherry red keyswitches from the WASD website and I use those springs with both ends and 3 coils cut off for super soft touch typing, the keyswitch parts seem to be fully interchangeable, and I have to say this has given my stalled dreams of being a writer new-found hope as I can actually type without pain once more!

CAVEAT: In NO WAY am I recommending people modify their keyboards; doing so voids any warranty, can damage the keyboard and if one is foolish enough to do so while its plugged in, possibly suffer a shock. I am ONLY describing my own experiences, and for myself, this keyboard is a dream-saver and, putting my money where my mouth is, I am purchasing my THIRD one today; one for work, and two for home. Why? So that A. my fingers are happy with the super responsive modified keys and B. so that I don't suffer RSI; in short I am making it both a 'split keyboard' and a modified touch typing keyboard :) allowing for hours of daily comfortable typing.

I bought my G80-11900 second-hand about 4-5 years ago, it is by far the most comfortable and productive keyboard I have used. I find I get less fatigued while programming for hours on end, due partly to the low-force linear key switches, and the well-engineered arrow key + touchpad + numpad combo. The only con I can think of is the lack of a middle mouse button on the touchpad, but I just set a five-button mouse next to it. It is very durable, and believe me when I say mine has been through a lot; direct coffee spills, falling off the desk, things falling onto it, it was even accidentally exposed to direct flame at one point and didn't catch fire just melted a bit. No functional damage and it still works as good as new, which is to say far better than any other keyboard I own.

This is a well constructed keyboard, and works great even after being exposed to a dirty environment. Key caps hold their imprints well, and even after being scratched they don't come off. The board comes with linear MX black switches (manufactured by Cherry). They hold up well, and make for nice typing once you get used to them, but they don't offer any audible or tactile feedback unless you bottom out the keys. They register the keystroke just about half way down. This makes the keyboard really nice for "float typing". You don't have to hit these hard at all. If you do, it will feel harder to type on because the force increases as you press down the key. The keys do feel really smooth and intentional.

The touch pad and buttons work very well and are built solidly. I'd much rather use this than most laptop touch pads. The downside is that there is no multitouch for scrolling or pinch to zoom.

There are a couple of odd bits in the layout that are needed to get the keyboard into a smaller footprint. First, the CTRL, Windows, and ALT keys are small and set lower than the rest of the keys. They don't get in the way, but it takes a while to get used to key combinations. The layout of the function keys in two rows F1-6 and then F7-F12 underneath is also awkward and I just can't get used to it. The number keys are set up on the keyboard, which is actually not as odd as I thought it would be, but does make for a transition when you shift to number entry. The arrow keys however, are perfectly placed and fall nicely under the hand when you need them and it's easy to transition back to the letters for typing.

Finally, the "F" and "J" home row keys are cupped instead of having a dot. I actually like this way better than the dots.Read more ›
