Sadly, this is the same part found in a >$100 Baldwin interior handleset. The Baldwin part has patent #6536812; the patent's been through a few hands since 2003, but it appears to be owned by Kwikset now. I was using this latch on a garage door entry into a house. The combination of the door seals and requirement for self-closing (i.e. kids who just let the door slam itself shut) meant that this latch didn't last more than a year. This latch might work for a good long time on an interior door with less stringent wear and tear requirements, but it isn't well suited for the application just mentioned.

The failure mode is that the door latch will get cocked into a position from which the springs do not retract the mechanism, even though the latch moves and turns freely almost all of the time. Disassembly of the failed latch indicated the problem - repeated forcing of the mechanism when opening to defeat the force keeping the door closed (i.e. seals) eventually lead to bending of an obviously too small rod inside the mechanism (see pictures). I'm working on the theory that the bent rod rotates into a "bad" position when the door is allowed to slam shut and jar the mechanism. The only solution when this happens is to remove the door knobs and try to coax the cam mechanism to "click" back into operating position with a screwdriver.

You might say that what I am describing is not normal wear and tear, but it's pretty much to be expected in this type of use. The good thing is that these things are cheap. The sad thing is that Baldwin is just giving a nice look to the same crappy hardware everybody else uses.

Just the thing to fix a worn out bevel latch for Kwikset and Titan products. I am immensely pleased to report that the mechanism is all metal with no plastic, thanks guys. It is adjustable for different backsets and has a generous assortment of brackets, screws, and geegaws to fit just about any door. My only complaint is that the bevel on the latch isn't quite sloped enough; I had to hammer some more curvature onto the strike plate to get smooth closing action.

We have a front door that had a dead latch. I don't know why. The knob didn't have a lock on it, so if you wanted to open it, all you had to do was turn the knob. it was a useless feature, and it had broken three times. There's no fixing a broken dead latch. So this time I replaced it with a plain latch. I know, it says indoor, but bite me. This bad boy isn't going to break. My security is intact with two deadbolts.

This worked perfectly. Saved me from having to buy a whole new lock set. Just remove the doorplate and handle. The guts slide out and its very easy how to figure out how to replace the one you have inside your door now.

Some of my original Kwikset knobs used a plastic latch body and when I had to remove them they started to crack and break. the knobs were still in good shape so I saved some money and was able to just replace the latch portion. so far they work perfectly.

I bought this to replace the broken latch for a bedroom door. Doesn't work. It's a kwikset door handle. I measured the length but the once you slide door handles in, pulls the latch back and only sticks out about 1/8". The mechanism on my kwikset doors are square and it won't even move the latch mechanism. It says it works for all kwikset. I doesn't.

My home had cheap inside door knobs of unknown brand. Some of them would not fully retract the latch when I turned the knob. I noticed it was due to worn down surfaces where the knob's shaft pushes against these latch mechanisms.

I noticed my knobs resembled the cheap Kwikset-branded ones in my local Home Depot, so I suspected they had the same origin. I also noticed the photo of this product shows packaging that says, "FITS ALL KWIKSET PRODUCTS." Rather than replacing entire knobs, I took the cheaper way out and ordered these.

Not so good - I have a house that has Kwikset's on 8 outside doors. I replace one or two of these replacement parts per year. I have one door that is used many time a day, and that one is replaced almost like clockwork every two years. I would change all of my locksets to another brand, but at about six dollars a pop for this replacement part, I can't justify the cost of replacing the locksets. I just purchased two more of these today.
I had a 1927 vintage home that still had all the original locksets. I sold the home in 1997; 70 years...
I also have a refrigerator that is used full time in my kitchen, made in 1937, and it has been in the family since it was new. It has never needed repairing. I moved my modern refrigerator to the garage, since this older refrigerator is so much quieter...
I really, really wish they made products like they used to...
