Let me start out by saying I bought this 65 gallon model as a replacement for a two week-old SeaClone 100, and am I glad! I found this in the local Petco for $199 and looked it up on thier website, where they wanted $119 + Tax with free shipping, the store refused to match thier own website price. So I was planning to buy it from the website, but then I said "Self, you're an Amazon Prime member, lets check the price there!", so I did. So with a shipping upgrade of $3.99, in less than 24 hours the box was at my front door; total cost: $115.19, enough said!

OPERATION: Now for the product, so after setting this up (like all the others say, throw out the directions, they are useless) I could not get it to work properly (pumped water but no bubbles), after disassembling checking everything, and reassembling, it still would not produce bubbles; I could have saved a hour plus by simply blowing in the air tube and kick-starting the venturi action (doh!), so try this first! Within minutes this unit produced more foam and removed more protein than the SeaClone 100 did in two weeks; and 24 hours later the micro-bubble pattern in the unit is starting to take shape, reducing the amount of bubbles pumped into the tank. I hope that when it breaks in the bubbles in the tank cease completely, so I will update this in a few more days. It wasn't to difficult to balance the flow, I set the output valve to 50% then adjusted the input valve, located near the pump, until the water and micro-bubble concentration point was halfway up the cup port; this allows me to use the ouput adjustment to set the levels for either the "Dry Skim" or "Wet Skim" methods as described in the directions (the only useful part of the manual).

This skimmer is probably the cheapest skimmer I could find for my 55 gal reef tank. And it works well. I'm sure you get what you pay for in some things, so itsn't as robust as some of the other skimmers. But does the trick. I empty the skimmer about twice a week. It hooks up fine. Only beef I have with it is that you need to unplug the unit before unscrewing the top collection bin to empty it. I always clean it with some paper towels when emptying it cause it gets a little stinky. I'd recommend this product to anyone doing thier first reef tank. Cause it's affordable. And we all know how expensive salt water tanks can be.

I have been running an AquaC EV-240 with a mag 12 pump for over a year on my 300 gallon fowlr tank, I will tell the AquaC is one of the best dry skimmers on the market, but thats all they do, I put a coralife 220 super skimmer in the sump beside the AquaC and I do have to say, I feel the Coralife with the needle wheel technology is a far superior skimmer over the high pressure injection of the AquaC, as the needle wheel pump creates far more smaller air bubbles, and we all know, the more bubbles means more contact for the skimmate to be removed more efficiently.

Okay just being clear the new style skimmer I think is much better than the old one: I recently purchased the 125 model and it is being used on a 110 gallon FOWLR system as a HOB skimmer: It does not come with the best instructions but at the same time it's not hard to get running: I washed the unit before I put it in the tank to get the plastic film from production off the entire unit: Just warm water and a very small amount of vinegar in the kitchen sink: It started producing within an acouple of days: I must say it does sound a little noisy at first but mine did become quiter after about a week: I tried it first with the large round black sponge on the discharge tube and it worked: It just was to close the lights in my tank and started having some micro algea grow on it: I removed it and have not put it back on: adjustment of the skimmer is quite easy to me: Just turn the red knob till the bubbles are where you want them: Took about a week of fine adjustments to really get it working like I wanted: Micro bubbles were more than usual in the first two weeks, but have been reduced to near nothing: I did shorten the supplied tubing so the pump would sit closer to the input of the nozzle: it comes with two lengths so you can use HOB or sump setup: Large collection cup with a drain plug is nice for the price: Only compliant was the pump: In the user manual coralife recommends a 650-750gph pump for best operation: The pump shipped with is a 2000L/hr unit that converts to 528 GPH. I have not decided yet to upgrade the pump at my expense or not: But even with that said it does produce a huge amount of micro bubbles inside the skimmer and it still works: Overall not a bad skimmer for the price range: and it also comes with a tube silencer for the air intake whice is very noisy without it: I also noticed you need to tighten the collection cup down pretty tight because the grove the O-ring sits on is deep.

So i figured Coralife usually makes great products and I needed a skimmer for a 40g breeder saltwater tank I had just set up. Cone skimmers on average do a better job than box skimmers do but since the breeder tank isn't drilled I needed a HOB. Unfortunately I just went off review on Amazon about this particular skimmer and that cost me. Basically, it sets up quick and seems like a quality product but here is the issue.

1) the pump is like many in sump skimmers and requires to be in the water, Major issue is it will effect water temperature in the display.
2) directions for set up are horrid
3) they tell you to make sure the pump is 8 inches under the water level ( don't do this or you will never get it to work the pump is not strong enough to pull air into the air tube to produce bubbles (whole purpose of a skimmer and how it works)
4) the adjustment valves are finicky.
5) if you want this as a HOB skimmer be prepared to make many DIY modifications. tubing they give you is either too long or too short.
6) the largest issue as a HOB is that this is a pain to clean. it has a drain plug and they provide you with about 10 inches of airline tubing to drain it. Most tanks are much taller than that which makes setting up a bucket to catch the skimmate a pain. your better off turning it off and unscrewing the collection cup.
7) every time you turn it off it starts up again with issues causing you to spend hours of fiddling with adjustments.

I finally got it set to what I thought would be correct settings. woke up at 3 in the morning to the sound of running water to find my skimmer overflowing.

I finally found a customer service number to call and they basically told me nothing. Ended up returning this and buying a reef octo bh-1000. only had one issue with the octo since and it was completely user error. go with the reef octo
