Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Do away with bulky surround sound speaker systems while still bringing your movies and music to life with the Yamaha YSP-800 digital sound projector. Housed in a single bar-shaped body but equipped with 23 speaker drivers--each with its own digital amplifier--the YSP-800 delivers full-bodied, multichannel sound through a single elegant component. The device works by focusing the sound into "beams," and then projecting them at optical angles into the room via the analytical IntelliBeam function. At the same time, the YSP-800 controls the driver delay times and optimizes the level and frequency response of each beam. The resulting sound waves--both direct and reflected--create a soundscape that seems to be coming from speakers placed throughout the room, but in reality is playing through the digital sound projector.

The YSP-800 isn't just about sound, though. Its slim, contemporary design is also wildly convenient, as listeners no longer have to find complementary locations for five satellite speakers and a subwoofer, nor do they have to fuss with extra-long speaker cables running all through the house. Rather, listeners can place the YSP-800 next to or on top of their video display, or they can purchase an optional wall-mount bracket and hang it securely on the wall. The latter option is particularly handy for owners of moderate-sized flat-panel TVs and monitors, as it both saves space and visually complements the display. The projector is even versatile enough to work in corners or other unusual room configurations.

The projector's versatility extends to its variety of sound modes, which include a five-beam mode, a three-beam mode, a stereo mode, a stereo + three-beam mode, and a target mode. Each mode produces a unique effect that varies depending on the shape of the room, the orientation of the projector, and other factors. Meanwhile, a subtle blue LCD on the projector's base keeps listeners informed of the current surround setting and volume level.

Listeners will also dig the YSP-800's built-in 82-watt digital amplifier, which connects directly to A/V components. The amp offers a host of valuable features, including Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 decoding and a trio of Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP) programs (Movie, Music, and Sports). Connectivity stems from the three digital audio inputs (one coaxial and two optical) and two analog audio RCA inputs. The device also offers a subwoofer output terminal for listeners who want to enjoy a more robust bass performance.

The YSP-800, which is outfitted with twenty-one 1.62-inch tweeter/midrange drivers and a pair of 3.94-inch woofers, measures 31.5 by 6 by 4.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yamaha YSP 800 all-in-one surround sound, November 25, 2005
By J. Kelly (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If space is at a premium in your TV room, this is an ideal
all-in-one system, giving you real *theatre* surround sound.
I decided on the Yamaha YSP 800 over it's larger and more expensive version. The unit has 21 small speakers and 2 larger ones, in a neat and compact enclosure. It also came with a separate Yamaha subwoofer. I have my unit sitting in front of my plasma TV, on a cabinet. I needed to raise the TV in order to access the remote spot; otherwise the YSP was blocking it. Hooking up the various cables was fairly straightforward.
I purchased a quality subwoofer cable and one extra digital cable, but the unit is supplied with both. Setting up how the unit will sound in a particular room was very easy also. A microphone is supplied, which you attach to the unit and place in the area, on a supplied tripod, where you are likely to do most of your listening. The unit sets itself up by bouncing sound off the walls and calibrating distances, volume etc.
I was able to teach my Sony universal remote to operate all but one function of the YSP.
The sound is amazing, especially with *Trubase* activated. There are various modes of sound available, eg, night time cinema, in case people are trying to sleep nearby.
I couldn't be happier with this product: one unit, no other speakers cluttering the room, no cables snaking under or on the floor. You have to listen to it to believe how good it sounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Used with a Subwoofer, this piece rocks..., February 21, 2006
I'm an avid audiophile, and have been listening to high-end systems for many years. I'm a tough customer.

I recently bought a 32" LCD HDTV for my bedroom. My wife didn't want me running speakers to all corners of the room, and I wanted something that sounded good enough to watch movies in bed.

Took a chance with the YSP-800 after reading the reviews.

Couple of observations:

The auto-setup is truly remarkable. Comes with the microphone and it just does its stuff.

The unit does not come with the ability to mount to a wall without a special wall bracket that you must buy separately.

It has three digital inputs - two optical Toslink and one coax.

I used it without a Subwoofer and with. No comparison.

Without a subwoofer, don't bother spending the money. With a subwoofer, hold onto your hat.

I'm using a Sunfire Subwoofer and the system sounds spectacular. It sounds great for music, TV and movies.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product in the right room, December 11, 2005
This is a fantastic product if:

1) You can't or don't want to run wires and setup rear speakers in a surround sound configuration.
2) Your room has walls on the sides and back to bounce the rear sound beams off of.
3) Your room meets the minimum dimensions.
4) You don't sit directly against the back wall of your room.
Look at the diagrams on the Yamaha website if you have questions. If your room isn't compatible with this system, you probably should consider something else.

I bought this unit a last week and am very happy with it. The surround effect is quite convincing and having an LFE channel is great. You WILL need to purchase a subwoofer for use with this unit. It is not included. I use the YST-FSW100 though any decent subwoofer should be fine if you already own one.

If you try to get by with just TruBass and no woofer, you'll be disappointed. TruBass is a psycho-accoustic effect that tricks you into thinking you're hearing low notes that are absent or quiet by producing higher frequencies in the harmonic series for the low note in question. It can be a very convincing effect but it is no substitute for the real thing.
