Product Description

I’ve always been interested in what catalyst makes people change, and this seemed a good way to explore it – taking an essentially passive individual and giving her the proverbial once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blueberry fields, but not forever, October 17, 2005
By Carter Jefferson (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
It's not often one finds a passive character well enough
portrayed to provoke interest. But Jeannette Angell's
Carrie does more than that. She wanders through the
blueberry fields of Maine's northern coast, she works in
the local music and TV rental store, she quietly accepts
her mother's constant harassment. Underneath,
however, a fire is banked. Angell shows us the "summer
people" through the eyes of a local, and they are not
pretty--but they represent something that might, under
just the right circumstances, provoke a quiet girl to
action.

Beautifully written, this is an unusually fine short story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Imminently readable, February 6, 2006
By Richard Lewis (Denpasar, Bali Indonesia) - See all my reviews

What I particularly liked about this imminently readable story was its depiction of a small New England town that finds itself square on the tourist trail. I grew up in Bali, and I can intimately relate to that (although unlike the story's narrator, Carrie Norman, I had no wish to escape-the surfing here was too good). Angell deftly brings alive the citizens and the landscape of Coldstream, Maine, and also Carrie's inner landscape, which is bigger than the outer. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like Visiting the old Homeplace, December 11, 2005
By Jody Ewing (Western Iowa) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jeannette Angell's "Summer People," not only captures a realistic sense of place with its satellite dishes next to rickety shacks, but elicits a visceral understanding of the characters who inhabit Coldstream's backwoods community. Carrie Normand has never known any other life, but the regular southern visitors with all their money and influence -- and Carrie's acute awareness that a better life exists -- underscores this beautifully written story about one young woman's deeply-rooted love for home despite her burning desire to break free. 'Summer People' leaves the reader feeling as if they're standing once again on the grounds of the old homeplace, listening as the present calls while yearning for a time now keenly shaped at its best by wishful memory. A truly magnificent read.

This is a great little short story. For me it was a different point of view coming from the people who actually live all year in the vacation destinations we visit. Read more
