Edited 12/10/15 to fix some typos. Thanks for kind comments!

This is a very nice analog tester. It has a quality feel, and test leads that appear likely to hold up to long use. It handles a very wide range of batteries. I am very pleased with mine, especially at its low price. There are incredibly cheap units available on Amazon, but they lack the ability to appropriately load the battery being tested. Here's what I mean.

A battery tester works by putting a load on a battery and measuring the voltage at the battery terminals. The reason is that this voltage, measured with a good voltmeter that draws almost no current, changes little as the battery wears out. What does change is that the battery's internal resistance increases, which wastes energy, and the amount of chemicals available to generate current decreases. By putting a load on the battery, the meter can see whether the battery is still able to do its job.

This tester has 9 positions which set it to select a reasonable load and voltage range for a battery type, giving you a much more reliable test than a plain voltmeter can. See the table below. Notice that there are 3 different current drain settings for 1.5 V batteries. These are chosen to roughly match their normal use; 1 mA for tiny button cells used for watches, 50 mA for AAA batteries, used for remote controls, and 150 mA for AA or bigger C and D batteries used for flashlights, etc. If a tester draws too much current, it can deplete the battery just by testing it, and a battery tested at too little load may test "Good" yet not work in your device.

Understanding this, this tester is still very useful in sorting through batteries, even if your device uses an unusually high or low amount of current.

I spent many hours researching battery testers and decided to purchase the Gardner Bender GBT-500A. It has worked very well. It is easy to use and has been very accurate. I was a bit concerned that it did not list NiMH batteries as being batteries that could be tested. But after more research I noted that NiMH batteries are the next generation of rechargeable batteries (replacing NiCAD). So far the tester has worked like a champ with the NiMH batteries as well as the other kinds listed. I highly recommend it.

Most battery testers in this price range only tests the batteries voltage. The Gardner Bender GBT-500A battery tester puts a load on the batteries by using resisters. If you test a battery for 5-seconds and the "Replace & Good" indicator needle fluctuates on your GBT-500A means the battery is poor health even though it reads in the "Good" range. Battery readings that fluctuates will not have enough power to operate anything demanding like flashlights camera flash units ect.

Brand new AA Energizer battery reads 70% on the "Replace & Good" indicator and 60% with fully changed AA Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries on my GBT-500A battery tester. Make note of your needle reading on the "Replace & Good" indicator since this reading may very between testers. The GBT-500A battery tester is going to be the best buy in this price range for testing alkaline batteries. Keep in mind the GBT-500A battery tester has a manufacture date of 1995.

The GBT-500A is not a true 1.25 Volt battery tester for rechargeable batteries since the resister is made to put a load resistance of 1.5.Volts the voltage of an "alkaline battery". The most accurate battery tester on the market these days is the "ZTS" which that puts a pulse load test on the battery testing the battery as if it was in use and tells you the % of the battery life remaining. What is a Pulse Load Test? A 'load' refers to a current drain that is applied to a battery. For example, charging the flash in a camera. We use the term 'Pulse Load' to indicate that the load is automatically applied for a specific period of time, then disconnected without user intervention. This method enables testing of the battery under relatively large loads without draining or damaging the battery.

Important to understand about this battery tester compared to other testers: this tester draws the proper amount of current according to the battery size. So a battery that passes this tester will REALLY WORK wherever you install it. Other cheaper testers only check the no-current voltage of the battery--an almost dead battery will show the proper voltage, but will NOT function properly when installed in a device that draws current. With the Gardner Bender tester, you can check each battery separately when your electronic device reports "battery low" and recycle only the batteries that are truly used up; the others can safely be returned to service. The best and only choice for a compact battery tester.

Works very well. My only reservations are that it needs a NiHM and AA and AAA Lithium setting or needs to be relabeled. It has a NiCad setting which can be used for NiHM batteries and the AA and AAA Alkaline setting can be used for Lithium batteries because they are similar. Finally, the test probes, electrical connects, are standard pointed needles. It would better if it had flat contacts or a flat side on the probe. After using this battery tester for about a year now, I found the best way to check batteries is to put the minus side of the battery on the silver button marked "-" and use the red probe to contact the plus side of the battery and not use the black probe anymore.
