I received the new Selmer Clarinet for my son very quickly. On first inspection, the quality appears as good as the rental Selmer from the school's supplier and at this price it will save us quite a bit before the school year ends. Included with this model are two barrel joints - useful later on after he learns the other registers. Also include is a canvas case, much lighter than the hard plastic cases but with a dense foam lining that should protect it just as well so long as it's not abused.

The only problem so far is the ligature doesn't seem to fit very well, though this may just need to be adjusted a bit until it becomes more flexible.

All in all, if your child (or you) enjoys learning the Clarinet, try the rental for a couple of months then buy this one!

My son rented a Prelude Clarinet for four months and liked it. I bought him a hundred dollar clarinet that got good reviews thinking it would be satisfactory to him, but it was not. He liked his Prelude a lot better, so I returned the other one and got this, the model 710 with the .583 inch bore. The bore is slightly bigger than the CL711 with the .569 inch bore, and so it gives a slightly bigger sound. It comes with two barrels, and one is slightly shorter than the other one, so you play with whichever one gives you the best pitch. The case is nice too. It has backpack straps that tuck neatly in a zippered pouch when not in use, as well as a shoulder strap and is thoughtfully designed I think. Overall, this is a very good clarinet for the beginner student.

A good clarinet for beginners to start with. The sound's quality is acceptable. The keys are comfortable except the lower keys (the four keys on the right that are close to the bell). The mouthpiece is also not very comfortable but it's not a big problem in the beginning. Overall, a student or a beginner doesn't need anything more than this clarinet.

I am not familiar with the quality of most of the $100 clarinets on Amazon. The quality for this one is average at best. The mouthpiece did not fit to the barrel and some other pieces are hard to remove even after application of the supplied lube. I would not recommend this for a child.
