The residue left by this spray is pure silicone oil. As other reviewers have noted, the can does contain propellants and volatile solvents. That goes with the territory for aerosol products and does not contradict Kellogg's marketing.

Silicone oil has some useful properties. It doesn't evaporate away or turn semi-solid over time, as WD-40 does. Nor does it thicken up much at low temps. Silicone oil won't damage rubber, although the acetone solvent might cause damage to some plastics before it evaporates.

I was introduced to the product by an ex-Marine Corps firearms instructor, who recommended spray and wipe application to my shotgun before skeet shooting in some drizzle.

Some other uses I've found are:

Helps keep a snowblower's chute from icing up on slush;

Keep snow from sticking to a snow shovel;

Clean a bicycle chain with better lubrication than WD-40 can provide;

Lubricate locks and keep them from freezing up in winter;

Lubricate door and car hinges;

Soften and restore flexibility to leather gardening gloves;

Cure a sticking zipper by applying to a Q-tip and running along the zipper. Only a trace is required. (Warning, may stain the cloth if over applied);

Salvage a scratchy, noisy volume control;

Etc., etc.

I was first introduced to Kellogs pure silicone in 1967 in the Marines for use on my rifle and magazines and have now been using it for 47 years. I will use nothing else on my weapons and other things. It lasts 26 times longer than oil, collects less dust which is easily brushed off, and I got away with cleaning my rifle for a year (unless I shot it) before reapplying a small amount just to upkeep. Since, I have used it for lubricating locks and hinges and all sorts of machinery (never needed anything else since), on my windshield and snow blower and lawn mower to prevent ice formation,grass buildup and sticking, tires to dress them, vinyl and leather protection and waterproofing, and it makes dusting around the house a snap. I highly recommend this product and give it as gifts. Kellogs even has food grade silicone (which I have not used). Be sure to go to www.kellogsprofessionalproducts.com, click "Pure Silicone" and print the MSDS sheet (4 pages). Heed the safety recommendations, especially about physical contact and ignition sources.

This stuff is wonderful for those applications that you want it to slip but you don't want it to collect dirt. I use it for my casement windows. They used to be a chore to open. Now they glide open and close like a breeze. Just a little spray on the internal mechanism and all joy. (This had to be done from the outside with the window open to access the gearing, but well worth the effort.)
Drawers that used to be hard to open now are easy to use. A little squirt on the rollers and it just works.
I highly recommend it for so many things that you just want to slide but don't want oily.

Best single item I've purchased in a long time! So many things it's good for. Be careful with plastics as the carrier for this can dissolve some. Make your 30 year old car's windows run up and down like new. Make those sticky aluminum windows slide so smoothly you have to be careful to not have them move too fast when opening. Yes, you may have to apply it again later. No, it's not a cure-all. Darn close though.

Pure silicon is hard to find locally. So when I seen Amazon had, I ordered a few cans. I like to use this on all weather stripping seals on the autos.

Pros- protects and preserves

Cons- will leave a white film on plastic, so don't use on plastic. Protect plastic from over spray

Tremendously useful product for a wide range of needs. Door hardware, crank-out window apparatus, car window scrapers, minivan door tracks, all kinds of things where you want a good persistent lubricating film that won't stain, discolor, or attract undue dust. Don't get too carried away, though, it's not water-based, if you follow me...

Just as it says, pure silicone! I used it on my $350 black leather motorcycle jacket. It works great! The product lives up to everything it claims! Well worth the few extra dollars a can! No additive crap that gets all sticky and it smells like silicone smells, no additional ingredients that make the smell strong and over powering!

I use this silicone oil for airsoft gas guns because this oil is the only one I could find that does not have petroleum distillates. Petroleum distillates cause the rubber seals in an airsoft gun to swell and cease functioning. I used to be able to find this silicone oil in stores, but now Amazon shall provide me with this product.
