Rust-Oleum Gloss White

Pros:

- more durable than latex-based paints.

- Dries MUCH shinier than gloss latex paints.

- Easy to apply; takes at least 2 coats for good coverage.

- Rustoleum isn't just for metal. It sticks just fine to bare wood, painted wood, masonry, PVC, etc., or anything previously painted. I've been using it to paint the interior & exterior of my house for years.

- Rustoleum doesn't "prevent" rust, but it does protect any surface, including steel or iron. If your goal is maximum rust protection, use gloss paint; NOT flat. Flat painted surfaces hold more moisture than a shiny (gloss) surface, and that retention allows rust to get a foothold. E.g., our steel storm door started rusting in under a year with flat Rustoleum, but stays rust-free for about 3 years with gloss Rustoleum.

- Rustoleum has a quicker drying formula than it did in years past. Today's Rustoleum will generally dry to the touch (on a warm day) in under 6 hours. Lower temps and/or higher humidity increases drying time. Outside on a hot sunny day, it dries in under 3 hours.

Cons:

- custom colors are not offered (e.g, it doesn't come in a "base" version, from which dyes can be added)

- takes longer to dry than latex

- clean-up requires paint-thinner (or similar), versus soap and water for latex paints

- stinks up your house for days if you've painted a large surface; such as interior doors. Some people get headaches from the fumes. The obvious way to mitigate the fumes in the house is to paint on warm days and leave the windows open as long as possible.

My wife has a 2001 low mileage Prizm which had a few rusted areas that I repaired last summer. To complete the job I was going to buy the spray cans matching the paint code. The cost amazed me when I learned it would cost hundreds. Even the cheapest paint shop was about $500 with no prep. I had read about Rust-Oleum being used to paint cars and thought it was a joke. But in my never ending pursuit of saving a buck I investigated the web and believed the claims were credible. There were even videos supporting the stories.

I laid out $8 for a quart of Rust-Oleum White #7792 and a few more for some mineral spirits and started the project. I removed trim, wet sanded the car, and masked where I could. I mixed paint to a ratio of 55% paint and 45% mineral spirits by volume which is really thin and runny, but necessary for proper drying and leveling. I applied a thin coat (no runs) with a 6" good quality foam roller and foam brush and let it dry a day between coats. After three coats I said "OMG, I don't know about this." After five coats I was getting real impressed and my wife started talking to me again. After seven coats she was real impressed.

I had wet sanded very lightly between coats and after letting the final coat cure for a week I final sanded to 3000 grit. I completed the job with Meguiars Ultimate Rubbing Compound followed by Meguiars Ultimate Polishing Compound. I don't have a buffer so it took me three days to complete by hand. Paint, spirits, sandpaper, disposable brushes/roller covers, tape and compound set me back about $75 total for the job. The project took about 2-1/2 weeks in warm, dry weather.

After a few coats I found it is best to plan a path for each panel on how you apply so you are always working with wet, not tacky paint.

I had an older metal shed that needed a LOT of fixing up. It had rust in spots but the metal was basically sound, but if nothing was done it was going to be gone in a couple years. During the hotter summer days I washed the dirt off it, scrubbed it, sanded it, prepped it all over then applied a coat of the Rustoleum oil based primer. THEN I put two coats of this Gloss White paint on it. It basically made the shed impervious to rain. When it rains, water beads up on the roof of the shed, just sits there in large bulbous suspended drops but IT AINT COMIN' IN! Two coats of this basically enbalmed and armored my metal shed against the elements for probably the next 20 years. It's a wonderful - if messy to apply -- product.

ADDENDUM: This Rustoleum oil-based enamel in a PAINT CAN does not come in colors only primer, white and black. If you * really * want color, I suggest: apply the primer base, two coats of white and then apply spray cans of Rustoleum colored paint -- add color that way. You'll probably have to do some tape masking to avoid overspray but it's do-able. I know because I spray painted the back of my shed a forest green to blend in with the hedge between us and the neighbors. It works.

I used this on my kitchen cabinets. It does need 2 coats for total coverage. Also best used with a roller rather than a paint brush. Looks great and has really brightened up the room. Everyone who has seen it is amazed at how it has improved the kitchen.
