I did a side by side test of this and a product called Evapo-rust that I bought at rural king for $16/gal. I soaked equally rusty bolts and nuts in both for about 2 days and here are the results.

Evapo-rust is on the left, Naval Jelly on the right. As you can see, the Naval jelly did not perform as well at penetrating the rust and lifting it. I will note that both products ask that you clean the metal before soaking...I didn't do this.

One advantage that Naval Jelly does have is it's thick viscosity. It could be painted on where evaporust cannot.

There are several bad reviews here. This works wonders if left on overnight. It will take ALL rust off. The directions may not say leave it on that long, but it doesn't hurt anything if you do.

My father always used navel jelly and when I wanted to rehab an old wrought iron table base I knew it would do the job. It was easy to use and removed the rusted areas with little effort. The more rusted areas required 2 applications. I have a beautifully restored table base thanks to navel jelly an oldie but still goodie.

My father's garden shed leaked and since it was a few years before anyone checked, all his tools rusted. I feel like an expert now.

1) Get a large jug of vinegar (white or apple cider) and fill a basin or bucket with it and soak small things for a few hours or overnight. This works well on aluminum and small things like drill bits, levels, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, scissors, wrenches, small garden shears, etc. It also works on things with holes, springs, screws, etc. where the jelly can't get. Scrub with a metal brush before and after. The rust will come right off and the vinegar will be dark brown. Rinse with water and IMMEDIATELY dry and apply Rustoleum RUST INHIBITOR (which is a spray that is like an oil and prevents rust). Otherwise, they will rust again right away.

2.) Some things that are not quite clean after a vinegar application will benefit from applying Naval Jelly (like pliers and sheers, knives, wrenches). Just smear it on with a brush and let it sit. Scrub it with a brush and rinse. Then dry apply the Rust Inhibitor. The jelly tends to drip just a bit, so use a basin or something to catch the drips and put the tools in, if possible.

3) Naval jelly works great on big things (hand saws, large garden sheers, pry bars, pipe wrenches, a tool box, metal utility shelves).

4.) Some things (like a terrible pipe wrench) may need multiple applications of both naval jelly and vinegar! Hammers were the worst--I ended up spraying the heads with Rustoleum Rust Restorer which painted the heads black but they look good.

There is nothing equal to Naval Jelly. If you want to remove the rust with almost no elbow grease, this is what you want. The elbow grease is only needed for severe rust cases. Started using this stuff 40+ years ago and it has yet to fail me.

I use this in my shower. I take a blue scrubby sponge (not the green ones as those scratch glass) and spread the jelly around. It removes the hard water spots within seconds. I've also used it to remove crust and buildup from the shower head and in my bathroom sink. Don't expect it to instantly burn off any/all buildup. It takes a little patience but it does get the job done.

My experience with this product is that it *will* remove rust. However, you gotta do it keeping certain things in mind.

One, it requires more than a thin film to truly remove rust. I found that this jelly likes to form either thick blobs or thin film. It is the thick blobs that beat the crap out of the rust. They generally require about 15-45mins to do their magic, depending on how bad the rust is. I could not get the jelly to cohere in any other form.

Two, it requires a surface horizontal enough for the blobs to not slide off. This jelly does NOT stick to vertical surfaces as anything other than a useless film. If you are trying to apply this to a vertical surface, you will have to hold a blob against the target area, and for certain jobs this is horribly impractical.

Overall, this product was a bit of a disappointment, because I had been hoping to use it on my truck undercarriage. If you just need to clean a easily accessible horizontal surface, or tools, this product will work great. Any application more challenging than that, I cannot recommend this product, sadly.

To date, I have not found any true naval jelly. The kind that I have seen variously described as being able to stick to any surface in any orientation. That most certainly does not describe this product.

Product works extremely well for all applications that I have used it on. The best I have ever used over the past 30 years.
