If there are any signs of contamination, follow the manufacturer’s service information to thoroughly clean the fuel system. |
Check electrical connectionsWhen replacing a fuel pump, you need to check for proper electrical connections, pressure, volume, and current. The specs that don’t measure up require further investigation into the entire fuel system. When servicing an electric fuel pump, always replace the strainer. Also, inspect the inline fuel filter for contamination, which could restrict proper fuel flow within the system. |
Maintain proper fuel levelsMaintaining proper fuel levels aids in cooling the pump, which, in turn, adds to its longevity. It’s important to remember that constantly running your vehicle with a near empty fuel tank can cause the pump to fail. |
Signs of Wear and Troubleshooting
Fuel pump signs of wear can include: poor engine starting characteristics, slow response when accelerating, intermittent power loss, excessive noise, vibration while driving, and/or fuel gauge reading incorrectly.
Fuel contamination is one of the top reasons for fuel pump failure. However, contamination has many other partners in crime that can help seize the functions of the fuel pump. Additive breakdowns, rust, scale, and even the delamination of the fuel tank liner can clog the pickup strainer or inline filter.
Issues with a fuel pump can be caused by: internal electrical shorts, a sticking fuel tank float, and/or damaged or corroded electrical components.
Make a service appointment if your vehicle shows any of the following symptoms (they can indicate a major issue with your fuel pump and/or fuel system): 'Service Engine Soon' light is illuminated, improper engine idling, hesitation, or stalling, excessive exhaust smoke, abnormal engine noises, and/or noticeable fuel odors.
