5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Smith: "This ship is going to founder.", May 15, 2009

My VHS copy of the pictured PARAMOUNT tape is recorded in SP mode and has fine video quality-- source film is well-preserved. Audio, however is very high and hangs on the edge of distortion.

FILM SYNOPSIS--
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER has a patina of authenticity that no Titanic movie before or since can match. This British telling of the April 1912 shipping disaster is leaner yet far better than the previous 1953 American-made TITANIC (VHS) (DVD), which dallied in fictional subplots. The people we meet here really existed, and their actions are well-documented. The scope of the story is the ship's last night afloat, the events that caused its iceberg collision, the many forlorn efforts to alert nearby vessels and the steadfast actions of crew and most passengers as Titanic took on water, settled by the bow and eventually sank, taking with her over 1,500 souls.

Our central character is Second Officer Charles Lightoller (More), who was the highest ranking officer to survive his vessel's sinking. Lightoller supervised the loading and launch of lifeboats and later miraculously avoided drowning, even though an eddy created by the foundering ship pulled him underwater. A fortuitous blast of escaping hot air blew Lightoller to the surface but then he and others clinging to an overturned collapsible life raft were almost crushed by a falling smokestack.

Although events are familiar and the story's conclusion a given, "Night to Remember" is taut, moving and filled with tales of personal heroism and sacrifice, also the anguish of a compounded disaster that might easily have been entirely avoided.

Related item:
The fictional THE LAST VOYAGE (1960) with Robert Stack, Dorothy Malone and Edmond O'Brien, realistically portrays a Pacific maritime disaster. Here, an aging luxury liner's engine room catches fire and there's a massive explosion that dooms the ship. (VHS) (DVD)
