I have always had shift kits in my hot rods turned up as firm as they can go. I needed something for my winter beater, a 94 F150 4WD with the 5.8. The stock transmission was HORRIBLE! I may be spoiled from driving my newer diesel around, but I can't believe how soft and slow the stock 94 transmission shifted. I didn't want anything that would chirp the tires when it shifted as I mostly drive this in the snow and didn't want to lose control every time it shifted. I did the stage 1 - Heavy Duty springs and I skipped the electronic resistor install thing (pending what I thought of the way it shifted). Well it shifted perfectly! It firmed it up a lot, without being neck snapping. Brought it up to par with newer trucks, instead of a 1950's Cadillac feel. Driving around "normal," 1/4 throttle or less, you can tell there's a difference, but you can't feel a thing. Start opening it up a little, and it'll push you back in the seat a little bit when it shifts, but I won't be giving it that much throttle 90% of the time and definitely not in the snow. Combined with the fully synthetic Mobile 1 ATF and a new transmission filter, this was the best $130 I've ever spent. I can tow and haul with a lot more confidence about the transmission.
Installation wasn't the greatest. The biggest thing was getting covered with ATF. Nothing like oil dripping down your arms and into your armpits while getting all the parts out of the bottom. If the transmission is out of the car already, that's a huge bonus. But otherwise a very straight forward install. Make sure to get some petroleum jelly for the install to hold all the little check balls and springs into place when you put it back together. Take your time, be careful to follow the instructions exactly and anyone should have zero problems installing. I also believe you can skip the wiring resistor install thing, as that thing supposedly only firms up part throttle shifts, which I didn't really want firmed up much.

The B&M Shift Improver kit is a great product (actually 2 in 1 since it has 2 possible setups), it comes with all the parts necessary to modify the shift speed and firmness (it won't modify the shift points), and to augment the pump pressure output in your trans. This particular kit is aimed at the E4OD transmission found in many Ford trucks from 1989 to 1997, in my case this kit was installed in the E4OD found on my 1993 Bronco. If this is your first time messing with a transmission then this is your kit, detailed step by step intructions will help you all the way, and it isn't as involved as some other kits in the market. Regarding the quality, it's top notch (even though the supplied drill bit broke), the springs are beefy and strong compared to the stock ones you'll find in there, and there is a new cork pan gasket which is very nice (not my favorite kind, but it worked great and it hasn't the slightest hint of a leak).

The installation will require some time and attention, but it can be done easily and with mostly regular tools, if the trans is out of the truck I recommend doing the pump spring modification, if not, then you'll have to do the resistor mod (this is a "either one or the other" deal, don't do both). Personally I have refrained from doing the resistor mod, but might do it in the future.
