Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This DVD explains the sources and causes of the current conflict in Afghanistan. It goes through the historical reasons, starting with the foundation of Modern Afghanistan under King Abdul Rehman, who was followed by Habibullah, Amanullah, Bacha Saqao, Nadir Shah, Zahir Shah, Daud Khan, Taraki, Hafizullah Amin, Babrak Karmal, Najibullah, Mojadidi, Burhanuddin Rabbani, Gulbuddin, the Taliban and the current leadership. In just 60 minutes, this DVD goes through this entire sweep of history and brings us up to today. The narrator, Ismail Sloan, is part of this story too. Arrested as a spy by the Taraki government, he escaped from jail in Lashkar Gah, was arrested again while trying to sneak across the border into Pakistan, and was held in Demazang and Puli Charqi prisons. He learned to speak Pashto and Farsi while locked up in prison. Almost all of his fellow prisoners were executed. He, almost alone, has lived to tell about it. Background music is in the Pashto language: Da Watan, "This is Our Country", sung by Istad Awal Mir

2.0 out of 5 stars Uncle Sam's Slide Show and Lecture, January 19, 2010
By Judi Kaufman "jmkaufman" (Harrisburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am a college instructor and I asked my institution to purchase this DVD in order to provide background information for my students prior to reading the novel, "The Kite Runner." I had envisioned something like a history channel documentary with video footage accompanying a well-organized presentation of the history of Afghanistan. That is not what this video is - imagine Sam Sloan bringing his slide projector with his slides of everything from maps, to famous government officials and family members - to your living room. He stands in front of the slide screen and lectures about Afghanistan in a fairly random manner, accompanied by his slides. "Uncle" Sam also brought one song on CD, the one song is set to replay over and over and over and over and over - one song, forever!! In all fairness, the video is not presented as a historical documentary, and it is not one. It is a chat about Afghanistan and "Uncle" Sam's experiences there - rather enjoyable, in fact (except for the song which repeats into infinity,) if taken in that way... but students who are looking for historical information on and an orientation to the political environment of Afghanistan will be totally confused until their brain shuts down and they begin texting each other.
