When I went to a live performance I couldn't understand the lyrics of the trio that introduced the opera. This DVD didn't help, I still couldn't understand those lyrics. However, the two main characters are excellent and the recording is worth having.

Compositions of this type occupy an important niche in musical theater, and that includes opera. The chamber opera, a form as old as Henry Purcell, provides a bridge by which a listener can cross over to Verdi and Puccini. Or not. And opera workshops, with young singers can really make a statement with this piece. It also exists on it's own, saying what it needs to say, in a relatively short time. Some of the throw aways in this piece date it somewhat, but it's core theatrical principles remain. It's about relationships.
As much as I have a friend who was in the original cast of "A Quiet Place", Bernstein's revisit to this piece, extending it into a three acter was a mistake. It works well on its own.
You make a mistake if you judge the music alone. It's a whole piece. And judging the music alone, I think Bernstein comes off better than most opera composers. No "big guitar" accompaniments here.
The mixed media of opera on television with animation provide a most enjoyable piece. Well sung and acted, the animation provides a wonderful backdrop. My only complaint (minor) it that the LSO isn't quite idiomatic for this music; it doesn't always "swing" as it should.
Not a significant contribution to opera? Well, the Met isn't going to do it and thank goodness for that!

This film was made, I believe in the early 70's. Although it uses live actors it also uses animation that viewers will either find dated or quaint depending on your point of view. It didn't bother me, but I can see that some might find it kitsch. I thought the singing was well done, but surprisingly, the orchestra, conducted by Bernstein is at times ragged and sloppy. It's not an easy score and my guess is that it was done under time constraints that affected the outcome. Also, although Amazon advertises the orchestra as being the London Symphony Orchestra, nowhere on the disc or in the credits does it make that claim, so I'm not sure who the players are. I'm giving it four stars since it is still a valuable document, i.e. the only filmed version of Trouble in Tahiti (that I'm aware of) conducted by Bernstein. But some may be disappointed by some of the orchestral playing. Btw, as to the other reviewer who stated that this piece is "no great shakes as a contribution to 20th Century opera", this is a one act opera! (And one of the better ones out there, certainly of the 20th century ones) So yes, it doesn't compare to Wozzeck or Peter Grimes, Katya Kabanova etc. but why would one make that comparison in the first place?

The production, conducted by Leonard Bernstein, who composed the score and wrote the libretto, can be considered the official version of what he had in mind. As such Bernstein fans, as well as those who are interested in the best known American Man of Music in his time, will find it a most useful source for judging the merits of the composer at an early stage of his development as a major purveyor of classical music. For that purpose, a contribution to understanding the development of The Maestro, I recommend it highly. Considered as a contribution to 20th century music or to Bernstein's stature, it is a distinctly minor work.
Animation as scenery, singing , orchestral support and over-all direction seems to make the most of the material.
In sum, an enjoyable brief (44 minutes)visit with an amiable Bernstein work but no great shakes as a contribution to 20th Century opera.
