OK, I have reviewed the HeatSheet blanket and Bivvie before, it's a great product for survival where space and weight are significant considerations- the two person size or the bivvie weigh about 3oz, and are about the size of a bar of soap.

At the far end of the scale would be a good high quality military surplus wool blanket- 6+ pounds. Good for a roomy trunk, your SUV, cabin or in the home.

Here, in the middle is the "Space' or "All Weather" blanket. A super tough laminate of fiber scrim and aluminized plastic, it weighs 12oz, and is about the size of a trade paperback book. There are several advantages of the "space blanket" (note the name is also used for the super-thin one-use mylar blankets, don't get them confused):
1. Re-usable over and over, these will take a beating.
2. More uses- they can be used as a tarp, picnic blanket, or on the floor of your tent to protect the tent bottom and reflect heat back. This is my primary use, I find that one of these- PLUS a pad- works about twice as well as a pad only.
3. They have grommets so are easier to use.
4. In the desert, they make a good sun protection tarp.

So, if one can afford the weight and room, I'd suggest one of these for survival purposes on a hiking trip (one of these plus a HeatSheet bivvie would be even better). Yes, another 12 oz is a little much, but with one of these for two hikers, it's not so bad.

On the other end of the scale, if you don't want a big heavy wool blanket cluttering up your trunk- or want another layer in "cold country" then this is also a good choice. It's also good for the office.

Get the orange/silver version, as it works for signaling too.

These are a must have in my opinion for winter tarp camping. one on the ground metallic side up and one under the tarp metallic side down. Build your fire next to the shelter and add a firewall and you'll be cooking warm in your very own oven.

I bought this off Cabelas site (for more $) so I may get another one here.
It has tons of positive reviews there....seems many RV-ers swear by this blanket to reflect summer heat off the roofs of their campers or the giant windows of the motor homes. The durability, the many positive reviews made me want to try it - figured if nothing else, I would use it as a car blanket, etc...

I have a "one bag" philosophy except for canoe trips where I absolutely know I won't have any portages. That being so, what I take has to do what I expect, hold up, and preferably be multi-use.

*I've used this on 8-9 trips so far. It's exceeded what I wanted it to do. I really wanted the green, but I got the red for my one piece of gear that could be a signal flag if needed. (Still not warmed up to something so bright in my camp!)
*I have used this for a pack wrap up under my hammock and rain fly every night out. It keeps everything dry for surprise rain storms, but also keeps a lot of creepy crawlies out of my stuff.
*Used it for a shelter half on a quick lunch stop to block the days strong wind and build a nice fire for coffee and lunch.
*The above use almost burned me out of my lean-to shelter with the fire-reflecting heat (it was summer)...so I remembered that and used it like that on purpose in a fall camp - temps in the 30's and 40's and I was TOASTY by the campfire.
*Used it for a rain tarp - quick and easy to set up with the grommets
*Used it to reflect my body heat at night in a winter camp just last weekend - my hammock has a bottom pocket to slide a theromrest or something in - my hammock is so comfy I don't need the padding, but in the winter this I found is perfect to stay warm. It was 23 degrees one night on my turkey day outing up in the BWCA.

Edit.

I've discovered a better way to use this in a tent. In a small two person tent, put this up against one wall of the tent and it ups the ambient temp of the tent really well. In a small tent, i tie two corners along the angular top edge, and two corners along one edge of the base heat reflector facing inwards, of course. Takes a little while but it works better than laying it underneath your sleeping bag. For the floor, a sleeping pad works better to deal with the cold.

---
Those tiny mylar blankets are incredible examples of super efficiency in a tiny package. But for repeated use, they just aren't durable enough.

That's what makes this blanket so amazing. it's plenty durable to last for several uses. As a heat reflector, there are tons of uses for it. If you're tent camping, you lay this on the tent floor with the reflector side up and you will be much warmer in your sleeping bag since ground temperatures are often colder than other areas when you're in the sleeping bag. For additional warmth, you can fold it over your sleeping bag. It also adds an albeit small additional layer of cushion. If you want to make it more secure, you can tie the grommets together at the foot end and you won't have to worry as much about the folded flap falling back. It's completely waterproof which protects you from the tent walls which often collect condensation. I've only tested this in my backyard in preparation for an upcoming hiking trip, but it works well.

They are also great to sit on. Fold it a few times to make it a little more cushiony and sit on it....(^-^) Keeps your butt warm. If you sleep on a cot, the airflow underneath can be really cold. Here again, put it under the sleeping bag.
