I have been using the AMPAD 22-157 for many years. The new ones are not using the same paper. The old thickness for all 76 pages would measure 0.480". Now they measure 0.310" for all 76 pages. That is 35% lighter paper! I would gladly pay these high prices for the original notebook, but these are not the quality that are required for $20 notebooks. I am sad though, as there are no apparent replacements. Anybody have any ideas as to where to get good quality notebooks?

I was a huge fan of these books, price just did not matter. They were the only ones with solid wire binding that would last the time the book was filled and beyond, the only ones with good solid covers hard enough to protect the contents. Most importantly they were absolutely top quality paper - suitable for fountain pen, felt-tip, pencil, it would probably even stand up to watercolors. The paper was a beautiful texture that showed absolutely no bleed-through and was also incredibly durable - repeated erasers, scotch tape, paper clips no trouble. This was my ideal notebook.

I have just ordered and received another ten of these books to find that unlike my previous books (Made in USA) they are now Made in Mexico. The wire binding and covers seem to be a bit lighter gauge. That I could live with, but the paper is different. It is shiny and completely unlike the old books.

If you are buying these books because you require a sequentially numbered wire-bound notebook and you don't much care about paper quality perhaps these are still OK.

If you care about the paper, if you are a repeat customer because of the paper, look elsewhere. Try to find old stock of the USA-made books somewhere before I do. You might be much better off buying some Moleskine grid books and taking them to a bindery to have that superior paper rebound, or even work out something with your local paper supplier and bindery. I am very disappointed with my purchase.

I was first introduced to the Ampad #22-157 Computation Book when on a high-tech product development team about a decade ago. Back then, the company paid for 'em but now I have to. After the frustration of using cheaper substitutes, I simply won't use anything else. Bottom Line: This is a professional-quality tool with no compromises. Anything less is just for doodling.

PROs
-Rigid and durable: stays flat when writing on any surface, covers and pages won't rumple like cheaper notebooks
-Spiral binding is very strong, will not crush or distort, opens completely to lay flat
-Graph paper rule
-Numbered pages allow for easy indexing
-A pleasure to write on: highest-quality paper accepts ink consistently without bleed-through (great with "Pilot G-2 07" pen)
-Buff-colored paper reduces eye strain

CONs
-10x the price of the junky kids' notebooks but you get what you pay for here
-Big and bulky but makes up for it with a large, comfortable writing surface

I have used these as daily record books since we were assigned to buy them for college courses in 1961. They are spiral-bound, lie flat, are page-numbered and graph-ruled. You can tape an 8 1/2 x 11 page in them and not have it hang over the edges, if you want.

They're getting expensive...

I have had one of these notebooks for 4 years and in that time it has had water spilled on it umpteen times, crushed, bent, thrown, etc and I think I have lost only 1 page. Only worth the money if you A. really treasure what you are going to write in your notebook, or B. the notebook is going to take major abuse.

This is the second item (notebook) I've received in not the best condition. I love the notebooks but am really irritated by the condition they arrive in. They have creases in them, corners bent, etc. Sorry but that little stuff really bugs me, especially when I'm paying as much as I am for these. If I'm buying a new product it needs to look new, not like it's been previously owned.
