Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This "Television Favorites" compilation offers a sampling of Night Court, one of the zaniest and bawdiest shows to hit network primetime in the 1980s. In the pilot, we meet the Mel Tormé-loving, joke-playing, too-young judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson) presiding over the night beat of New York. Joining him are lecherous assistant district attorney Dan (John Larroquette), bald Bunyanesque bailiff Bull (Richard Moll), and uptight court clerk Lana (Karen Austin). The other five episodes are all from later seasons (4-6) when the series was at its peak. The cast solidified with court clerk Mac (Charles Robinson), sexy public defender Christine (Markie Post), and dry-as-a-martini-wit bailiff Roz (Marsha Warfield). In "Her Honor," Harry is removed from the bench and replaced by Christine, leading to the memorable image of him riding roller skates wearing a jet pack. Unfortunately, the two episodes included here ended season 4, but not included are the two episodes that opened season 5 and finished the story line. Bull is struck by lightning in "Death of a Bailiff," Dan is tempted by a young Teri Hatcher in "Who Was That Mashed Man?" (both from season 5), and a disaster threatens both the courtroom and Dan's political campaign in "Fire" (season 6).

While most of Warner's "Television Favorites" releases have been single-disc samplers to gauge the market for a full-season release, Night Court is different because the complete first season was previously released on DVD (the pilot is on both releases, but with a commentary track only on the full-season release). Presumably, slow sales on the initial DVD set prompted this release as a test case for the viability of future seasons. It's a bit like apples and oranges, however, as the later seasons were much better than the first. Fans want those seasons in full, of course. Unfortunately, if they decide to boycott the Television Favorites disc on principle, the slow sales might mean the last eight seasons of Night Court will never make it to DVD at all. --David Horiuchi

Product Description

Judge Harry T. Stone presides over the New York City night court. The cases that come before Judge Stone are always a little bit silly, but it's up for debate whether his motley crew of staff or the criminals for whom he dispenses justice are more bizarre. Enjoy the chaos that made this hilarious 80s sitcom one of the top shows of its time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why not Season 2?, December 30, 2005
Night Court is a very funny show, and I will not stand to see a classic go down the drain! A BEST OF dvd should not be the answer for bad sales on Season 1! Everyone knows that the better, more memorable episodes occured after the first season. Why couldn't Warner Bros just come out with Season 2, and consider what they should do from those sales? I'm sure all Night Court fans are as disgusted as I am to see such horrible treatment being done to such a classic. Anyone who feels the same should give a 1 star for this dvd with a review explaination that we want a SEASON 2 DVD set!!!!! Believe me, I am not going to spend my own money on such an unappropriate bestof dvd.

1.0 out of 5 stars What the #*&$ is this $#!+ !!! ... An apeal to WBHV., February 4, 2006
By bobtec (Redlands, CA) - See all my reviews
Dear WBHV-

I applauded you when "The Treasures of the Sierra Madre" was released. I thrilled when you came out with "The Gangster Collection". I gave a standing ovation when you released the 1932 version of "King Kong". Now you wanna go and do this? I'll tell you what this is. This is worse than what TCFHV did with the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" (they went something like 2 or 3 years before they would release season 2 because of poor sales - but at least they didn't insult our intellegence by releasing a cheap "best of" type video of all the seasons combined (that's only "best of" in the eyes of the executives at WBHV), just season 1). If you're not going to release the entire catalog of Night Court, then at least release the ones with Selma Diamond in it (she must be rolling in her grave at what you did). Please consider it. In the meantime, I will NOT buy this cheap substitution.

-Bobtec.

Addendum: (as of 4/30/09) Thank you!!! Any Markie Post fans there that are thinking of making a 3rd season set?

1.0 out of 5 stars I Hope This is Nothing More Than a Stall Tactic..., January 7, 2006
By BRADLEY R HUTSON "hutsman" (Sesser, IL United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This disc represents a scary and disturbing possibility: That Warner Bros. is brushing off releasing the rest of the seasons of "Night Court" in favor of offering this poorly selected group of episodes as a kind of "peace offering." I've even heard that these are not even the original NBC broadcast versions, but rather the edited syndication versions. I've never known Warner to release anything other than uncut episodes of a TV show before. But, I know there is always that possibility, since other publishers have certainly done it already. The REALLY scary part of it is just this: If this disc performs poorly, it very well could be the final nail in the coffin of the hope of any more uncut season sets to be released. BUT, how can Warner Bros. realistically expect true fans of the show to buy such an inferior product as this? It's no secret that we are all craving the full season sets in uncut format. If Warner feels that the first season set did not sell enough copies, then here's a good idea: Get more copies of the set available at retailers! When the season one set first became available, I noticed that a lot of the stores around here did not even have it! Those that did soon sold out, but almost all of them never restocked it! It seems to me that since the first shipment sold well and quickly, more shipments should have followed. But the slots that had been occupied by "Night Court" were then filled by something else, and it never seemed to show up again. It's almost like it got lost in the shuffle of a continually changing store lineup of available titles. I sincerely believe that it would have done much better if given the chance.

Even though buying this disc might send a message to Warner that "Night Court" is not dead, I can't bring myself to support this lackluster offering. We all have to take a stand and send a message to Warner that this disc belongs in the garbage by NOT buying it. Let's all appeal to them via e-mail or snail mail to resume complete season sets of the original NBC versions. There is no doubt in my mind that season two would be gobbled up immediately. All they would have to do is put it out there, and give it better exposure than season one. We would DEFINITELY take care of the rest.
