There's a lot to like about this plane, and if they'd only paid a little more attention to detail, it would have been a fine tool. I bought mine direct from Grizzly for significantly less than the price here, so I was suspicious as to how good it could be, but after reading the positive reviews here I decided to risk it.

The good bits: The body is machined well, with a flat base and sides that are perpendicular. The Blade takes a good edge with some work. But that's where it ends.

The fence not perpendicular to the blade, which means it's just about impossible to cut a straight rabbet. The spur/nicker blade isn't a blade at all- it doesn't have a edge, and requires a good deal of grinding to make it work. It also fits very loosely (and too deeply) in the recess cut for it. The front mouth is cut perfectly, but the rear mouth- the one you're using 99% of the time- has an abrupt shoulder that doesn't properly support the blade, and so it chatters on cross grain. And the depth stop won't stay in place unless you crank the brass nut down with a pair of pliers.

I was tempted to try and fix these problems, but I have no way of extending the sole, or fixing the alignment of the guide rods, which would require welding and milling, or at a minimum, making an add-on wooden fence that's planed parallel to the sole. I sent it back to Grizzly, and a week and a half later I got a replacement. This one was covered in heavy grease, which makes me wonder if the first one I received wasn't a repackaged return. I cleaned it up with mineral spirits, gave it a coat of wax to protect it from rusting, and honed the back of the blade.

All the bad things you can read in the other reviews are true of the plane I received. The fence is crooked, the blade is in bad condition, the machining is far from perfect, the nicker is nothing special. I wiped the thing down with light solvent to get the oil off, sharpened the blade, and took the thing to the shop for a quick test. It worked just fine. The grease used to keep the unit from rusting during shipping made the blade slip around. There are better rabbet planes out there, but they cost about 3 times as much. If you're looking for the very best in tools, this unit may not be for you. If you're looking for something that's functional, and you can tune a plane and make it work, the savings will be all yours.

This fillister rabbet plane, like the Record 778 it is copied for, has a lot going for it. It has a square iron which is easy to sharpen instead of being skewed like most. It sports a screw to adjust the iron which is so much more controlable than the lever put on the Stanleys of old. It's such a close copy that even the little points on the casting that aren't necessary are still there. It even says "778" on it.

The plane did take a little bit of work because the fence was not perfectly perpindicular to the sole of the plane. This was fixed easily by putting some sandpaper on the side of a board and running the plane on the top of the board. When I had a scratch pattern that covered the entire inside of the fence, it was done and square. Didn't take long and worked perfectly - then attached a larger walnut fence to the oringial.

The blade that comes with it is a bit thin but will work. I recommend getting a Lie-Nielsen replacement iron for the Record 778. It adds $35 to the overall price but it's a high quality thick blade that will last a lifetime. It still puts the plane well under $100 total and made a great difference and as to performance and sharpness retention.

There really is no difference between this plane and the orignal 778 - I know because I owned both. When I got the original 778 for a great deal, I eventually sold the Grizzly, but regret it because it worked every bit as well - just needed that little tweaking.

I honed the blade and cut some 1/4" rabbets and it worked great! Watch where you put your free hand along the side. I kept cutting my finger by not being careful and resting my left hand right where the edge of the blade stuck out. Operator error!
