The mouse I have almost been waiting for... (8/15 - review downgraded to 2 stars - see addendum), June 8, 2006
NOTE: Mouse completely broken after 5 weeks - had to throw it out. Original review follows:
I am a BIG fan of the Logitech Wingman Gaming mouse - in my mind the best gaming mouse ever made except for the lack of a wheel, a thumb button, and optical sensor. Well...here it is. Essentially the same design as the Wingman WITH a wheel and a thumb button. My joy was unrestrained when I saw that this mouse had been made - as if someone had read my mind and made exactly the mouse I would have made for myself. I had VERY high expectations despite the reviews here and despite the "Fatality" name which to me is a turn-off for any product (being a 34 year old physician I don't exactly start getting smarmy in the pants over products badged with a teen gaming idol's name on it). But I don't care about the name - give me a good mouse and I'll buy it. For me this is an upgrade from my current G5.
The good:
- just like the Wingman this mouse fits the hand PERFECTLY. You almost don't even notice that the mouse is there.
- The three finger buttons are in exactly the right place.
- The smaller teflon feet make it glide much more smoothly than the G5 which tends to pick up dirt more on hard surfaces.
- Tracking seems good - on par with the Logitech G5.
- The wheel has a smooth, effortless feel to it.
- The weights are a nice feature...been done before, but a nice feature none the less.
The bad
- Yes the cord is stiff and short. Not a big issue for me since my monitor has a USB hub but...come on guys, if you're going to do it, do it right.
- The buttons have a very cheap feel to them. On the original Wingman the buttons had a perfect snickety effortless action to them. These buttons are cheaper, more "plasticky," and reqire more effort to press. Its actually hard to double-click with this mouse. In my mind thats a huge gaming "no-no."
- The weights, while nice, are nowhere near heavy enough. The G5 gives you at least twice the heft.
- Where is the thumb button? Wha? Was this a design mistake? You have to practically take your hand off the mouse and reach back to get to the thumb button. Very poorly done.
In all I do really like the mouse. I think a lot of the negative reviews are biased by people who either dislike "Fatal1ty," or are used to the enourmous Microsoft/Logitech mice that you can rest your whole arm on. This mouse has exactly the right idea with some shoddy fit-and-finish work which is really quite a shame. If it fixed those problems I would be stocking up on them and likely would never need another mouse.
ADDENDUM: I have now owned the mouse about 2 months. It has gone completely on the fritz. The buttons have gone to hell. Holding down buttons does not result in continuous motion now but stuttering. The optical sensor has seemed to crap out as well. Movement is now jerky and erratic. This is terrible. I've never even owned a cheap mouse that had these problems. I had to toss it and go back to my Logitech. I still really liked the design and I hope that they can get it right next time.

Very unimpressed, June 1, 2006
The weight change is nice but as you hold the mouse and put pressure on the top, the weight releases up into your hand. The physical size of the mouse is too small, it does not feel comfortable. The cable is very stiff and lies in loops across the desk. After several ejections of the weight, many small pieces of plastic were broken off and were discarded. I expect that to be called a gamer's mouse all these deficiencies need to be corrected. Very annoying - I returned what was left of the mouse and received my money back and all this trouble was in two weeks time, save your money and get a logitech mouse.

I'm sure most people get excited when they buy a new product, and thus review that the product is great right away. Well, I have been using this mouse daily for about a month now and I am NOT impressed.
I bought this mouse mainly because it was on sale after rebate for a very cheap price -- and I can see why it was so cheap: the product itself is cheap in quality as well. I'll probably be using the word CHEAP a lot in this review to describe this mouse. I would be very mad if I had paid retail for this. It's not worth it. Jonathan "Fatal1ty", "a world top gamer", designed this mouse? I think he should just stick to what he is supposably good at -- playing games -- than enginnering a mouse.
The clicking noise of the mouse just sounds very cheap and loud. I would not want to be in a room with a bunch of gamers using this mouse: it would be a clicking hell frenzy. Let alone, you will annoy someone trying to sleep using this mouse at night.
After a month, the response for the left click just has gone terribly bad; I have to click really hard to get a response or sometimes it double clicks even though I am clicking once. It is very frustrating. It seems the cheap microswitches inside (I uploaded a picture in Picture Gallery), which creates the loud clicking noise, can't reach against the button or it just won't trigger anything. I'm sure you're thinking I just had a defective product, right? Well, you can take your chances but this is actually a common problem being discussed in the Creative forums. You can google "Creative Fatal1ty clicking problem" and you should see some of it come up. Terrible quality control. I have not even used this mouse for any games yet, only for casual browsing and navigating my computer -- hardly abused the mouse -- and yet the mouse can't handle that? Wouldn't gamers need to constantly use the left mouse as their primary action button? -- and also have to react fast and press on the mouse quickly, or some would pound, on the mouse? It seems Creative only tested this product to a group of people for one day. Don't expect this mouse to last. You may, however, open up the mouse (which will probably void your warranty) and keep clicking on the microswitch with your fingers and try to "revive" (it could be stuck or not in the correct position) it. After doing that, it seems it temporarily fixed itself for me.
The "True Grip" 5 point control system -- #1. a small button on the left side of the mouse (thumb), #2. regular left click (index finger), #3. scroll wheel (middle finger), #4. regular right click (ring finger), #5. another button right next to the right click (pinky) -- is where Creative wants you to have each finger resting on a button: this is extremely awkward. I doubt people would adjust to use the mouse that way. Why do we need to change our way of holding the mouse? The mouse should be adjusting to us! If they really wanted people to use this mouse that way, they really need to design the mouse bigger. The mouse feels like a laptop mouse.
The Teflon feet on the mouse is nothing special, although they seem to advertise that as some sort of special feature. You know they're getting desperate when they're also stating the cord on the mouse as something special too: "SpeedWire Zero - Oxygen Copper Wire". I mean, sure, it sounds cool, but I see "Zero" benefit. There's also an illuminated light on the side of the mouse with the Fatal1ty logo; I think this was added as an cover-up of the overall look of the mouse, because added lights make it seem like it has more value. Oh, and black color always looks good. Without those two key points, this mouse will not be able to deceive some people -- it'll really look cheap just like how it was made.
Pros:
- Quick CPI mouse speed change and LED to indicate which mode you're on.
- Changing of weighted mouse is unique, I have to admit... but it's not a mindblowing feature. (there is also a con, however)
Cons:
- It just feels very cheap; the quality is not something I expected from Creative, especially it being promoted by a professional gamer as well.
- Clicking noise is too LOUD (compared to a quality mouse) and it just sounds cheap.
- Terrible enginnering, especially the microswitches.
- I don't think the weights are that secure - again, it just feels CHEAP and some weights rattle.
If you're looking for a gaming mouse or an all-around mouse, I'd go with Logitech.
