4.0 out of 5 stars Good product for the price -Satisfied-, September 16, 2006
For the price, this product does the job. The instructions were a little poor. For example, they state to set the drive jumper to "master". Well, I did that and it did not work. I really had to set the jumper to "single". After I got that figured out, it was easy to fit into the enclosure. They even included a screw driver and screws in the box. I didn't need anything. That was a nice surprise. After connecting to my USB (Win XP), it was detected and I could access all of my stored files.

I have several hard drives in a box leftover from years of upgrades (a pack rat of sorts). I am considering getting several of these enclosures for these old hard drives, labeling them, and just connecting as the need arises.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for me!, June 7, 2006
By Java Wiz Kid (Venezuela) - See all my reviews
I must get a Ph.D in engineering because guess what... it works for me!.

The claims by reviewers below are risible.

#1. "No instructions". "I"m left guessing how to open it". Can you say "screwdriver"?. Sheesh, remove screws, open the box, plug the IDE drive to the IDE cable, power connector into the drive. Place screws, end of story!

#2. "No drivers on MacOS". Any OS which supports "USB Mass storage" devices will work. Gee, guess what... you have to FORMAT the drive before it can be seen by the OS. Jumper settings are also an issue. Any drive put into a USB enclosure must be set as MASTER. Anyone who has ever dealt with USB enclosures know that... except the reviewers below...

#3. "It is not shock absorbant". This is ridiculous!. What do you expect for $18 for Chrissakes!.

This device works as intended and is a great deal. If you're technically challenged or suffer from panic disorders and can't think rationally, avoid. You're better off paying $250 to Maxtor for a pre-assembled USB hard drive.

Tested with both WinXP SP2 and Linux

1.0 out of 5 stars Works, after 8 hours of fiddling by an experienced geek, February 5, 2008
I give this item 1 star because, although I now have it working fine on my 3 computers (running XP pro, XP home, and Vista), it took me hours of experimenting to find the one esoteric trick that would make it work -- and I'm no newbie either. The trick: First I figured out that the USB cable that came with the enclosure didn't work, so I threw it away and replaced it with another USB cable I had lying around. Then the computer recognized the USB device. Good start. But then I had to do something else: Set the drive jumper not to Master, not Slave, not Cable Select, but to the unmarked pins next to those three, which I believe is equivalent to not having any jumper at all. Then it worked right off the bat. No need to install drivers from the CD that comes with the enclosure (well, the CD doesn't work anyway). So the main problem with this enclosure is there's not enough documentation. It's ok for someone like me who likes tinkering with things and is willing to browse tech support forums for a few hours to find a solution, but don't most people want a product that will work more easily than that?
